I was thinking about the name John Gaius, and why it sounded so familiar to me, and then it hit me: John G.
Like the John G in Memento who pretends to be the friend of the protagonist, Leonard, in order to take advantage of Leonard’s memory issues and manipulate him into killing people.
John Gaius, who pretends to be Harrow’s friend, taking advantage of her (at a time when she is having severe memory issues) to manipulate her into killing planets and fighting for him.
I wanted to not be a grenade, to not be a malevolent force in the lives of people I loved.
