Help John Read

This morning John Gormley shared information from a confidential email sent to members of the Saskatchewan Teachers Federation. Gormley had all the information I or any other teacher received, yet he continued to misrepresent what was said in the message to STF members.

The message clearly states teachers will withdrawal all volunteer services not work-to-rule. In 2000 teachers worked-to-rule which meant teachers were at school from 9:00-3:30 and did not provide noon hour supervision or take work home to plan and mark. Beginning May 30th, 2011, Saskatchewan teachers will withdrawal volunteer services. This means teachers will plan for their classes and assess students work ensuring that all students receive the instruction necessary for students to complete the necessary outcomes and grade 12 students will graduate.

Despite what Sandi Urban Hall wants the public to think by requesting "the STF to make a formal promise that potential future strike action won't impact final exams for Grade 12 students" (Leader-Post May 25, 2011) teachers do care about the education of their students and want to be in the classroom.

Teachers wanting to be in class and getting a fair deal are not mutually exclusive.

In the video below, John Gormley, 3 years prior to becoming the Minister of the Environment clearly stated on RTE’s ‘Primetime’ program that fluoridated water was dangerous for babies and indeed elaborated on this by informing the public, quite rightly, that it caused bone cancer in children. He now expects us to pay, through the use of water meters, for the very same fluoridated toxic water which he openly admits is detrimental to human health.

During his radio show on Saskatoon's CKOM, John Gormley, brought up the petition by the Prairie Artists Against Enbridge.

... "a bunch of these "artists", and I put that in inverted commas, have written a letter to the National Arts Centre, because they're calling themselves Performers Against Enbridge. See, Enbridge pipelines, being associated with this, tarnishes the image with that company's disastrous environmental record. See, Enbridge is one of the participants in the oil sands, or as this letter helpfully points out, the tar sands and Enbridge wants to push the approval of that new twelve hundred kilometre pipeline to carry tar sands crude from Edmonton to B.C. The Project is opposed by a wide coalition of aboriginal communities and businesses along the pipeline corridor and would put Canada's sensitive wild salmon rivers at risk.

Yeah, that's your opinion. And it's only an opinion.

I attempted to highlight the sarcastic and mocking tone that Gormley is invoking by putting certain words in bold.

Gormley's show is heavy on opinion, but short on actual facts. He pauses frequently and gets many details about the story wrong. For example, the group who wrote the petition are called, Prairie Artists Against Enbridge, not "Performers Against Enbridge" as he continually calls them. This is not a huge error, but I'm willing to bet he had the website open in a browser tab while recording his show, and to not even pay attention to the headline of the article suggests that he may also be overlooking some other more important facts. Such as...

So, they also point out that this, this past summer, Enbridge, had a pipeline rupture that caused some fouling of a creek in, uh, near Lake Michigan. And that was well known, it was an oil spill. Enbridge paid to clean it up, and it was cleaned up.

That creek near Lake Michigan he refers to is Talmadge Creek. The United States Protection Agency said this about the event.

Monday, July 26, 2010, near Marshall. The release estimated at 819,000 gallons entered Talmadge Creek and flowed into the Kalamazoo River, a Lake Michigan tributary. Heavy rains caused the river to overtop existing dams and carried oil 30 miles downstream on the Kalamazoo River. On July 28, 2010, the spill was contained approximately 80 river miles from Lake Michigan.

Gormley goes on to belittle the artists who signed the petition and oppose Enbridge.

So who are these really... OK, let me put it this way. You know who didn't sign the letter? Ah, lets go over the list of acts in Prairie Scene who did not sign the letter. You might not be surprised to hear, that not signing the letter is Buffy Saint-Marie, the Winnipeg Ballet, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Randy Bachman, 'cause those are well known acts. Who rushed off to sign the letter? Well, such power house acts as, um, musicians... I don't know any of the names. Oh! Here are some bands. Burnthe8track, Comeback Kid, Head Hits Concrete, you up there with me yet? Pimpton, Um... Greg MacPherson, Mama Cutsworth, Chris Merc, Rob Morrison. The Paperbacks! Oh I remember... No I'm making that up to. Um... Other bands oh Wolbachia, hmmm..... oh. Who are the other bands here? Oh ok artists, Thomas Roussin, Deborah Schnitzer, Kerri Senkow, Leo Sepulveda, Ramiro Sepulveda, Brad Skibinsky, Molten Lava, oh there's a big band for ya. Ila Wenus, sounds like a made up name, Ila Wenus, that's a musician? haha, Oh ok, now the band. Oh Volcanoeless in Canada, there' a, yeah I've heard of them.

OK, the only band I've ever heard of is The Weakerthans. Yeah, the Weakerthans actually aren't a bad band. They're the only band you really know.

What's funny here is that I have heard of most of these bands. If you read this blog regularly you may know that I live in Winnipeg, and many of these musicians regularly play at local venues here. They are all very active in the prairie music scene (you know, the group that this event is supposed to represent).

From the list he fails to mention Giller Prize nominee and Canada Reads winning author, Miriam Toews as well as Nationally renown dancer and choreographer Susie Burpee and designer Derek Hague.

Now here's the best part.

A band that signed this and actually helped draft this was Propagandhi (mispronounced Prop-A-Gan-Die). Now Propangandhi, are a bunch of losers and idiots. They... Well, they might be an awesome punk rock band but uh you remember um the one guy, who calls himself Chris Hannah, Jesus Chris is his other name. The they got involved in the G7 protests, they were on the welcoming committee, um. They were involved in, uh, remember they hijacked that Beaver campaign on least popular Canadian and they go themselves, like their kinda wingy. But producer,Tammy, in her blog, did a little run down on Propagandhi, and the funniest part was the link to upcoming shows, it says "no shows coming up right now".

Damn, I bet Chris Hannah is just heartbroken to hear that he's such a big loser and an idiot. 1

He later on takes a call from a listener who challenges his statements about Propagandhi, and corrects his mispronunciation oh their name. He questions their seriousness and mocks them for being radical vegans.

Finally he accuses the artists of biting the hand that feeds, so to speak. He says that if these artists were really serious about their cause they wouldn't be taking money from Enbridge and wouldn't participate in the event.

But in addition to all of these bands say they want no part of Enbridge being a sponsor of Prairie Scene. I just wonder, will they take Enbridge's money? I think if you have a really strong moral argument wouldn't you just pull out of the Prairie Scene Festival? Oh, four acts have done that!

Well actually, the Weakerthans and Propagandhi both declined to participate in the festival, and from what I can tell based on the Prairie Scene Festival website almost none of the bands on the petition are playing at the festival.

We have decided that we can no longer continue in government.

Irish Green Party leader John Gormley • Revealing their plans to exit the coalition with Prime Minister Brian Cowen's government, likely forcing a much quicker election than Cowen anticipated. (One was planned for March 11th already, but might be needed sooner.) Despite washing their hands of Gormley's government, they plan on supporting a key piece of legislation regarding the country's austerity plan. (Edit: Sorry we screwed up the link; fixed now.
