Everybody knows him. Everybody loves him. It’s John Hattie!
I am not sure if I am a John Hattie fan. His early famous work was rife with errors about sample size and age of studies. However, I do believe that we are perpetuating a good bunch of incorrect pedagogues because we aren't paying attention to the research. We keep using these methodologies even though there is no evidence that they actually work.
Here are the myths Hattie says simply are not supported by the research:
Teaching at private schools is better than teaching at public schools
How much you spend on your child’s education equates to how well they will do at school
Homework is a necessary evil
Reducing class size leads to better outcomes for students
We should be happy if our children are ‘doing their best’
Teachers should be experts on their subject and do most of the talking in class
Wearing a school uniform has a positive impact on students’ results
Academic achievement of secondary school students is better at single sex schools
Extra-curricular activities distract and diminish school performance
TV has a negative effect on a child’s learning progress
A child’s birth date can have a negative impact on
