Born in 1935 in Maribor, Slovenia, John Holer immigrated to Canada and landed in the Niagara region in the late 1950s, opening the controversial Niagara Falls amusement park in 1963 with a few sea lions doing shows in a small pool
I guess we all knew this was coming soon. It will be interesting to see what will happen to Marineland after this.
After 12 years of working at Marineland as an animal trainer, I made the difficult decision to quit and speak out about the deplorable conditions and neglect I witnessed. I saw dolphins living in extremely poor quality water, their skin flaking off in chunks, and six out of seven harbour seals becoming blind or suffering severe eye damage. A baby beluga named “Skoot” died last month after being attacked by other belugas in a pool she should have never been forced into. Many people are appalled. Many are calling for Marineland to be closed, however what most don't know is that Ontario has no laws controlling aquariums and zoos, or protecting the animals inside. Without those laws no one will be able to save the animals of Marineland. Marineland is a major tourist destination for Canadians, Americans, and people from many other countries. The lack of animal protection laws in Ontario are a sore spot that need addressing. We need people from around the globe signing and sharing this petition to help make the Ontario Government aware of these gross injustices towards animals. I'm asking Premier Kathleen Wynne's Government to pass a new law that will regulate a high standard of care for animals in aquariums and zoos, and will provide an opportunity to close places like Marineland when they don’t comply. During the past 20 years there have been many attempts to help the animals at Marineland, but these attempts have never turned into real Government action. I'm also asking Marineland owner John Holer to allow me to visit Smooshi the Walrus who depends on me for care. Please sign and share so this can never happen again at Marineland or anywhere else. It’s time we speak for the animals! Phil Demers Click here to read Linda Diebel's amazing Toronto Star Series exposing Marineland. Marineland walrus, Apollo chased park owner John Holer (or as I call him Ass-Holer) off the stage. According to former trainer Phil Demers, Apollo and Holer have a history. Apollo doesn't like him.

Niagara Falls, CANADA - Niagara Falls City Council has facilitated, protected and defended the practice of animal captivity at Marineland for over half a century. Shady land deals and leases, favorable tax breaks, evictions and free passes have been the norm. This list is a list of 8 demands to see a reversal of this history and it is a list of demands that the M.A.D. campaign is committed to holding the City of Niagara Falls accountable to. A full pdf of the demands is attached as well as a timeline that highlights some of the history of the relationship with Marineland Canada and the City of Niagara Falls.
Marineland Animal Defense organizer Dylan Powell had this to say about the list, "These are all reasonable demands to ensure the bare minimum as far as transparency is concerned. Marineland Canada has operated above the law in this municipality for decades and that needs to end." Activist Mike Garrett added, "The City of Niagara Falls needs to be exposed for their willingness to participate in and shield the practice of animal captivity."
Marineland Animal Defense List of Demands to Niagara Falls City Council
- Immediately terminate the 2012 land lease on Portage Rd. - Immediately end the practice of holding and organizing closed door meetings between the City of Niagara Falls, Marineland and the Niagara Regional Police as well as a public release of all previous closed door meeting minutes. - Immediately enforce sign by law infractions, including the large “Marineland” sign which currently sits on municipal property. If this is not done by July 27th, 2013 we will erect a similar sign 100 FT from that sign and force the City to enforce their own by laws. - Immediately call for the removal of the fence erected by John Holer at the front of Marineland property which creates a safety hazard for emergency personnel (documented) and which situates municipal fire hydrants behind a physical barrier.
- Immediately publicize all property lines in relation to Marineland and initiate and enforce a process against John Holer and Marineland when they wrongfully, intentionally and repeatedly claim public property as their own. - The immediate removal of Dean Iorfida from the position of Niagara Falls City Clerk for the refusal to enforce by laws and the open and public dismissal of the eviction of the 47 families at the Green Oaks Trailer Park.
- The immediate call for a public and transparent hearing on the eviction of 47 families from the Green Oaks Trailer Park and the role played by council at that time. - The immediate public release of all City information and documentation in regards to Marineland, Marineland Animal Defense and the Green Oaks Trailer Park that would be released under a Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA) request. ### Niagara Falls City Council and Marineland Timeline Marineland Animal Defense List of Demands to Niagara Falls City Council

Marineland Animal Defense E-News: The Golden Leaflets!
Hey M.A.D.'ers,
Lots to update since our last mail out on May 22nd.&
nbspWe've kept pressure on the park in the form of surprise leaflet actions. Members have been out at the exit, entrance (far side) and at the We-Go gate offering the public and park goers information that they won't get inside Marineland's promotional material. The response from the park has been one of rage - John Holer (again) uttered a threat against a member of this campaign, Marineland has constantly filed complaints with Niagara Regional Police which have been frivolous and Marineland is now pushing to execute a land lease for the exit similar to the one they have for the entrance (they have actually been shutting down their exit and re-routing traffic out for their entrance when we leaflet - even though the entrance is not designed as an exit and public and traffic safety is compromised). All of this just so park goers don't get a leaflet. We call these are "golden leaflets" as the response from Marineland is John Holer is costing them a lot of money!
Aside from this we have some bad news to pass off. Since our last mail out Marineland has confirmed three deaths; Luna (Beluga, 1), Charlotte (Beluga, 3), and Baker (Sea Lion, 29). Luna and Charlotte died during the OPSCA investigation of the park - however, their deaths were not publicly confirmed until after allegations of their deaths were made public by advocates. Not wanting to experience the same press nightmare with the death of Baker, Marineland sent a horrible press release announcing his death as an attempt to get in front of the issue. We are entering a new era of intense pressure where Marineland can no longer decline to comment or announce deaths at the park.
Before these deaths we announce a demonstration for later this month "Memorial Demonstration for the Animals of Marineland." The announcement of these deaths makes that demonstration all the more important now. Please join us on Sunday June 23rd at 12pmout front of Marineland where we will read the names of the dead and honour their lives. Any help promoting the event is also greatly appreciated.
Last but not least, after helping to promote victorious campaigns with Ric O'Barry (who got his cheque at our Opening Day Demonstration) and Sam Simon, we have announced our own Billie Celebrity Challenge campaign and chosen famed Canadian Environmentalist David Suzuki as our celebrity. Please register, search for David and vote for us (daily!) and encourages others to as well. -- “There’s about as much educational benefit studying dolphins in captivity as there would be studying mankind by only observing prisoners held in solitary.” - Jacques Cousteau
