I have little interest in John Marshall outside his childhood friendship with James Monroe. I picked up some biographies about him because the amount of NAME DROPS Luther Martin has during Aaron Burr’s trial in Richmond. The amount of people who traveled to hear the attorney general from Maryland speak! Future Supreme Court Chief justice Roger B. Taney ironically said this about his mentor;

“ A profound lawyer, he committed the sin of non-omission. He never left anything out. As a result, he was not always listen to. He introduced so much extraneous matter, or dwelt so long on unimportant points, that the attention was apt to be fatigued and withdrawn, and the logic and force of his argument lost upon the Court or the jury.”

All this while hung over might I add. Luther Martin’s drinking was LEGENDARY also!
