Partial coffee service (Déjeuner “Culture et Récolte du cacao”), hard-paste porcelain (1836) Sèvres Manufactory (French, 1740–present) produced this inventive service commissioned by King Louis Philippe for Queen Marie-Amélie. Originally established at Vincennes and moved to Sèvres in 1756, the manufactory became the preeminent producer of European porcelain under the patronage of the French monarchy.

Jean Charles Develly (French, 1783–1849/62) designed and painted the scenes, which accurately document the cultivation and preparation of cacao. The colorful borders and motifs, gilded by Pierre Riton (French, active 1821–60), were intended to evoke ancient Aztec designs. Loc. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, US. Dim.
