THE DESCRIPTION OF SAINT JOHN NEUMANN The First American Canonized Bishop Feast Day: January 5
"Passio Christi Conforta Me (Passion of the Christ, strengthen me.)" -John Neumann's episcopalian motto
"All people of whatever race, condition or age, in virtue of their dignity as human persons have an inalienable right to education."
John Neumann, born as Johann Nepomuk Neumann on March 28, 1811, in Prachatitz, Kingdom of Bohemia, Austrian Empire (present-day Czech Republic) to Philip Neumann, a stocking knitter from Obernburg am Main, and Agnes Lepší, a harness maker. John was the third-born of the family of six.
Since he had a great desire to dedicate himself to the American missions, he was sent to the United States while still a seminarian.
Ordained a priest on June 25, 1836 by John Dubois, third bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of New York, John worked for four years for the German immigrants near Buffalo, New York. In 1840, he entered the Redemptorist order (Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer) and became a traveling preacher. After his appointment as bishop of Philadelphia on March 28, 1852 by Francis Kenrick, the third Bishop of the Diocese of Philadelphia, John established new seminaries, churches and schools.
Each year, he visited his parishes and mission stations, displaying his zeal and pastoral concern for the spiritual welfare of his people.
John Neumann died on January 5, 1860 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the age of 48, while doing errands. James Frederick Wood, a Philadelphia native who converted to Catholicism in Cincinnati in 1836 and who had been appointed Neumann's coadjutor with right of succession in 1857, succeeded Neumann as Bishop of Philadelphia.
John beatified in 1963 and later canonized as a saint by Pope Paul VI in 1977, his major shrine can be found in the National Shrine of Saint John Neumann in Philadelphia.

From a letter to Cardinal Barnabo by John Neumann, bishopI have labored with all my powers to fulfill the duties of my office Indeed, I have apparently delayed too long in writing to the Holy See the letter promised by the Archbishop of Baltimore in the name of the council. However, this delay was not without reason. For the council was scarcely finished and I was discussing the division of…
