does anyone ACTUALLY know how to use the propers of saints/commons of saints when praying liturgy of the hours?

#like how do i know when to use the saint memorial stuff and when to not?#for example #ibreivery is telling me to use the antiphon from the commons of one martyr for the invitatory #but it does not use the antiphons from the commons of one martyr for morning prayer psalmody #and then i thought that you weren't supposed to celebrate the saint memorials during daytime prayer #but there are daytime prayer antiphons and readings in the commons of saints #liturgy of the hours #divine office

I love praying the liturgy of the hours. How did it take me over 20 years to learn there’s a predictable, universal schedule by which to break up my day into three hour segments with prayer, hymns, and poetry? Major Catholic autism win.

I personally have not figured out how to use the large book that contains all those colored ribbons yet. I haven’t had the chance to own the book to try it out but thankfully I have found some great resources I think can shed some good light to try some of it out!

First thing I recommend is get the EWTN app. Go to the section called “Homilies, Prayers, and Devotions” and select Liturgy of the Hours for Laypeople. This is the series I’m currently binge watching, created by Fr. Timothy M. Gallagher, where he dives into the history of the Liturgy of the hours and gives a step by step guide through the daily practice. He uses language that’s easy for us laity to understand and has a lot of insight that has rekindled my interest to get back into it. This is a great place to start and takes away any overwhelming feelings of it. I wish I found this first, so now I can share it with others.

Next, check out Word on Fire. Bishop Barron has created a great series you can subscribe to each month that comes right to your door. These books don’t have ribbons, you get one book each month way less than what you spend on coffee a month! It contains mornings, evening, and night prayers that are easy to read and contains the hymns in the back of the book. This is the one I am re-subscribing to, because of how convenient it is, especially as a busy person offline. The books aren’t that big and can easily be carried around if you’re on the go. The page also has a video of it.

Magnificat magazine also has a shortened version of the morning, evening, night prayer (but I’ve never tried this one yet but I have had other Magnificat magazines).

You can even get apps of it on your phone! The first one, iBreviary, is free (I’ve tried it a little). The second one is divineoffice.org, but you pay (I haven’t tried this one yet).

The apps EWTN and CatholicTV both have video series you can watch of different sections of the Liturgy of the Hours, so you can get a feel for how it is and how it may sound. You can probably find those videos on their YouTube channels.

You can also find sections about it in the Catechism, so I can post those if you want.
