A developmental dance lab workshop of the classic Leonard Bernstein-Betty Comden-Adolph Green musical On the Town, directed by Tony winner John Rando and choreographed by Josh Bergasse, was presented to New York producers Dec. 19.
Interesting, interesting. Having seen this production of On The Town at Barrington Stage Co, I can honestly say that this is a fantastic production of On The Town. John Rando is really damn good and he did a great job with On The Town. The cast was great, the dancing was great, the staging was great, etc. etc.
The biggest downside for me is that it's On The Town. It's an awfully dated musical for modern audiences and I'm not sure the world needs or wants another Broadway revival of it at this point. But that may be my own particular prejudices as a 20-something theatre kid.
Certainly if they keep the main cast, I'll personally be thrilled to have Jay Armstrong Johnson back on Broadway (and hey, he really can dance) and to have him and Alysha Umphress doing Go Up To My Place, because they are HILARIOUS.
Oh. My. God. And directed by John Rando? I guess I have plans for June!
