John Singleton Mosby and Mosby’s Rangers

Perhaps, the best-known Confederate partisan cavalry unit was John Singleton Mosby’s Rangers. The unit was formed in January of 1863 by Mosby and named the 43rd Battalion Virginia Cavalry. This was later expanded into Mosby’s Command, a regimental-sized unit of partisan rangers operating in Northern Virginia.

John Singleton Mosby, nicknamed the "Grey Ghost", gained notoriety during the Civil War first for his excellence in gaining knowledge for the Confederacy-having aided General Lee of General Ambrose Burnside's activity leading up to Second Bull Run. Mosby soon tired of traditional cavalry methods and formed his own regiment and, though small, made dauntless attacks on forces that great outnumbered their own. By the end of the war, Mosby rose to rank of Colonel and his regiment swelled into the hundreds. His elusiveness greatly frustrated the Union army, and made him one of the most wanted men during the war.

John Singleton Mosby (December 6, 1833 – May 30, 1916), nicknamed The "Gray Ghost", Confederate cavalry battalion commander in the American Civil War. His command, the 43rd Battalion, 1st Virginia Cavalry, known as Mosby's Rangers or Mosby's Raiders, was a partisan ranger unit noted for its lightning quick raids and its ability to elude Union Army pursuers and disappear, blending in with local farmers and townsmen. The area of northern central Virginia in which Mosby operated with impunity was known during the war and ever since as Mosby's Confederacy. After the war, Mosby worked as an attorney and supported his former enemy's commander, President Ulysses S. Grant, serving as the U.S. consul to Hong Kong and in the Department of Justice.
