John Walker Lindh, the "American Taliban" was sentenced to twenty years in federal prison for his actions as an "enemy combatant" supporting the Taliban in Afghanistan after the U.S. invasion in October 2001.
Osama bin Laden, who ordered the 9/11 attacks, was killed by U.S. Navy SEALS in 2011. The United States’ goal in Afghanistan was to topple the Taliban regime*, which provided protection to Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda.
Currently about 500 Americans have been charged for their involvement in the coordinated violent assault on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. Almost one-fifth of them are current or former members of the U.S. military.
Those who ordered and encouraged the insurrection on the Capitol remain free and alive, and are being shielded by Congressional Republicans.
Will we see proportionate justice?
*in 2021, President Biden announced a full withdrawal from Afghanistan, after twenty years. The Taliban remains an active threat to the U.S.-supported Afghani government.
