every time i reread an issue of this series something new sticks out to me, like the painting behind bridget & john in the last panel. those colors are all present in the splash panel above. he's comparing her to a beloved work of art. this is such a beautiful story.

this might be one of the most important parts of absolute martian’s finale to me. john and bridget may have solved their emotional hangups, yes, but that doesn’t automatically mean they’re getting back together like things were before. it doesn’t undo all the times john flaked out on bridget for overtime at his job. it doesn’t magically smooth everything over. bridget was still hurt by him. she’s not just going to pretend that didn’t happen. she’s giving john another chance with her heart, to prove that he can be the person she knows he is. beautiful.

god i’m gonna be thinking about this forever. absolutely amazing work. it’s so cathartic and wonderful and filled with so much emotion it feels like the most indulgent fanwork i’ve ever seen and yet it’s just there. in the issue. this happened in canon. i fucking love this series

something i really loved about this issue was getting to see more of john and bridget together. this is the first conversation they've had that really solidifies them as a couple. it shows the reader what they can be with each other when things aren't terrible. they have some great chemistry in this scene! in addition, it's clear that bridget still loves john. this was something that issue #7 left very vague, and i think it's good that we were left in the dark on that for a bit. she clearly cares for him and wants him to get better, and even asks him if he thinks it's safe for him to be around her and tyler! she wants the best for him and misses her husband. i really didn't expect to find myself loving these two's dynamic when i started this book, but i'm thoroughly obsessed now.

so i was rereading the physical copy of absolute martian manhunter #8 as one does and i noticed something that i probably wouldn’t have caught reading it page by page digitally.

so, the pages as they are in the physical are really well formatted, as any deniz camp comic is. if you notice, the john & bridget panels start out as roughly half the page on top, with another small panel on the bottom. this is at the forefront of john’s mind. he’s present with his wife for the first time in a long time. however, as the situation with the martian intensifies, the panels of john and bridget shrink, and the martian’s story grows to take up more of the page. john’s focus is diverted. once again, the martian gets between john and bridget’s relationship. it’s fascinating, and i truly love how much care camp takes to make sure the experience of reading a comic book in physical matters.
