2019 TONYS - JOHN CLAY III Big Ups to John Clay III on his first Broadway Show (Best Play nominee “Choir Boy”) which led to his first live performance on the Tony Awards stage. BAM! John is one of the more recent additions to our Roofhead family. He joined the cast in 2016 as one of the male leads “Scope” for a critique/reading for our mentor Stephen Schwartz. (This was the historic season that saw the arrival of “Hamilton” and “The Color Purple” revival. John was a student at Carnegie Mellon —- in the middle of Finals Week! —- when we did the read & that night sat together in the audience and witnessed, first-hand, the birth of a musical theatre superstar in Cynthia Erivo. It was a magical couple of days. (S/O to @carriecompere for the backstage tour & comp magic!) . John is a talented and magnetic brother with a unique and powerful voice He has a kind of easy charm and devil-may-care fearlessness that I envy. He is well-deserving of the shine he is receiving. We know he’ll continue in that light for many shows and many years to come. . ——— My TuTchTfam may not know my “primary “starving artist” work is as a musical playwright. My musical in development, “Roofless” has had a handful of table readings and staged readings in the heart of the historic Broadway district but this (nearly) exclusively cast of characters of color has yet to reach the Great White Way. The dream continues though. Our current circuitous path is winding West, through Hollywood as we’re adapting the musical into a 10-episode limited series for screen.
