The Mother and the Bear (dir. Johnny Ma) x VIFF 2024.

South Korean actress Kim Ho-jung stars as a worried but disarming mother who travels to wintry Winnipeg after her immigrant daughter has an accident involving the titular bear and gets put into a coma. As she learns more, Kim's character must come to terms with how little she knew of her daughter's new life. It's ultimately an endearing but limited Canadian perspective of life outside of Korea.

Screened at the 2024 Vancouver International Film Festival as part of the Panorama series.

Screening at the VIFF Centre from Jan. 9-16.
