I mute all speeches at award ceremonies and sporting events. The "I want to thank the lord" monologues have been repeated ad nauseum.
Yes, thank the lord. Never mind the fact that you've trained all your life for 16 hours a day. Forget the fact that you followed a rigid dietary plan to ensure your health was always at an optimum level. Disregard the reality that you had to be ten times more disciplined than the average human so you would be able to compete at a high level when the Olympics/Superbowl/ World Cup/championship game came.
Forget that you kept trying even when you didn't succeed right away.
It was all god. He helped you. He looked at all the thousands of other elite performers that play the exact same sport as you do and said "Meh. How about I make this kid win. Better luck next time the rest of you."
Your sweat. Your unwavering discipline. Your dedicated coaches. Your effort to get up each morning and practice again and again and again. But god gets all the praise.
Damn that is one cushy gig! Who do I have to blow to have a tenth of that power?
