John O’Connor Canals, Barges and People Some gorgeous coloured linocuts from his 1950 book for Art and Technics. O’Connor studied at the Royal College under Ravilious and pioneered the use of colour in his cuts. He has been called the last heroic figure of the golden age of engravers, but I’m sure that’ll be contentious. I grew up near the Grand Union Canal and have very early memories of the last of the horse drawn barges when the canals were still (just about) working routes for industry. #johnoconnor #canals #popularart #folkart #grandunioncanal #ericravilious https://www.instagram.com/p/BtX8zlwAGzi/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=xam4y1f63iwb

Uxbridge Yard John O’Connor detail from Canals, Barges and People, published by Art and Technics in 1950. He was one of the last of that golden generation of wood engravers, a protégée of Eric Ravilious, who spotted his talent at the Royal College, and an early pioneer of the use of colour in his prints. For many years he was head of art at Colchester. This is for canal lovers everywhere. #johnoconnor #canals #barges #canalart #folkart #woodengraving #ericravilious #grandunioncanal #brentford
