John O’Connor Canals, Barges and People Some gorgeous coloured linocuts from his 1950 book for Art and Technics. O’Connor studied at the Royal College under Ravilious and pioneered the use of colour in his cuts. He has been called the last heroic figure of the golden age of engravers, but I’m sure that’ll be contentious. I grew up near the Grand Union Canal and have very early memories of the last of the horse drawn barges when the canals were still (just about) working routes for industry. #johnoconnor #canals #popularart #folkart #grandunioncanal #ericravilious https://www.instagram.com/p/BtX8zlwAGzi/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=xam4y1f63iwb

On Trust for The Nation Barbara Jones A few of her distinctive watercolours for Clough Williams-Ellis’ celebration of 50 years of the National Trust ‘for everyone, for ever’ published in 1947. Aside from Jones’ illustrations worth reading for Clough Williams-Ellis’ heartfelt introduction to the book, a dedication to the wonderful buildings lost to war and destruction and I found it moving to see he also laments the loss of the mediaeval centers of German towns too. #barbarajones #nationaltrust #recordingbritain #popularart #architecture https://www.instagram.com/p/BtfsJHUgHdO/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1bv8cdveoiade
