The Pace Report: "Through The Soul of #LoveCovers" The Kirk Whalum Interview
In a career spanning some 40 years, saxophonist Kirk Whalum has been one of the most in-demand session musicians as well as a leader in his own right on his own terms. This Grammy-Award winning musician has recorded and toured with the likes of Barbara Streisand, Al Jarreau, Larry Carlton, Quincy Jones and Luther Vandross. Kirk recorded with and toured with the legendary Whitney Houston for seven years and is heard on her landmark "I Will Always Love You" record from "The Bodyguard" soundtrack.
Kirk was in New York City recently promoting and playing a series of sold-out concerts at the Sheen Center for Thought and Culture for his latest CD, "#LoveCovers", on his Top Drawer Record label. This album features spirit-filled interpretations of contemporary songs by Stevie Wonder, Beyonce, Dolly Parton, and Marvin Gaye.
We sat down during his time in NYC to talk about this new record, reflect on the musical legacy of Luther Vandross and Whitney Houston, and how Kirk is using his music to encourage and uplift through the ministry.
