She had hoped to make a quick exit, but she’s stopped in her tracks half way to the door. She’d not sat through a church service since leaving her home town. Unless you counted the incident with the feather. Zed did not. 

Zed glanced to the wallet, amber hues taking in the familiar object. She nodded. “It is.” Her lips lift into a grateful smile. “Thank you. I’m sure you’d have gotten half way home before I realised.”

The hands on his are warm, grounding. They tether him away from the sickly knot of anger in the pit of his stomach. It does no good to rail against the future, against things like fate and destiny. 

But it doesn’t lessen his desire to kick and scream the entire way. 

“How do I make peace with it?”

His voice is soft, sticky in his throat.

“Knowing that my life is forfeit, beyond the purpose of these children?”

There’s guilt laying heavy on his shoulders just for thinking it. It should be enough. Helping people. 

But it isn’t.

as a person who just buried her granma whom was partially jewish and we did this exactly I am very pleased
