Hi dear! Could you recommend some bibliography on Shakespeare and editing studies? I’m researching the ‘bad’ quartos and I’d like to defend the dynamic nature of the Bard’s plays. I’m particularly interested in scholars who defend the idea of a Shakespeare who made revisions of his plays and worked with other playwrights, as opposed to the idea of a semi-divine Shakespeare who conceived his plays immaculate in his head and simply transcribed them flawlessly onto the page.
Hello there friend! I hope my reply to this is not too late to be of use to you; I’m afraid your ask got rather buried in my inbox. Editing and authorial attribution isn’t really my area, but I asked a friend of mine who works on this, and here are some recommendations:
Pollard, Alfred W., Shakespeare Folios and Quartos: A Study in the Bibliography of Shakespeare’s Plays 1594-1685 (London: Methuen, 1909) (The term ‘bad quarto’ comes from this book).
Egan, Gabriel, The Struggle for Shakespeare’s Text: Twentieth-Century Editorial Theory and Practice (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2010)
Maguire, Laurie, Shakespearean Suspect Texts (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1996)
Marcus, Leah S., Unediting the Renaissance: Shakespeare, Marlowe, Milton (London: Routledge, 1996)
Irace, Kathleen O., Reforming the ‘Bad’ Quartos: Performance and Provenance of Six Shakespearean First Editions (Newark: University of Delaware Press, 1994)
Some books that focus specifically on Hamlet:
Bourus, Terri, Young Shakespeare’s Young Hamlet: Print, Piracy and Performance (London: Palgrave Macmillan, 2014)
In terms of arguments about Shakespeare as a collaborator, I would have a look at the authorship studies stuff. A good place to start would be the Authorship Companion to the recent New Oxford Shakespeare, which collates most work in the area, so it will contain pretty much every reference you might need in that field. The editors who worked on that are pretty strong believers in the concept of the collaborative dynamic of writing plays, so it will definitely fit with the approach you’re hoping to take.
I hope this helps!
