even the nickname can’t stutter his groove. there’s a resonating slam into the floor across the net and ushijima flexes his fingers, stretching and every bit of his palm stings. he just curls and uncurls his fingers, trying to stop the sparks in his skin.

and finally, he turns, pinning oikawa with a steadfast gaze. there’s no irritation, no annoyance, just heavy, heavy silence and determination. raising the ball with one hand, he holds it out to oikawa, eyebrow pinched.

and for a moment, it looks like the great eagle will sweep in for the kill, eyes like dark seas, but ushijima just turns back to the court, rolling the ball between his hands. 

“go finish your own serves, oikawa.”

            ‘      . . .      ’          talking with him was always a headache.    talking with most people often turned out to be troublesome,    but oikawa had a special talent for making things    fucking insufferable.     most conversations left tobio going in blind,   not knowing what might be the    wrong thing   to say,    what might anger or upset the other person but sometimes he would walk away,  ego unscathed.

          with oikawa,    he was certain     no matter what       everything he said the older setter would have     something snide     to comment.    some issue,    some spiteful words to spit at him,    or something he would find     utterly hilarious     that would leave tobio feeling small    &   pathetic.

          there was no walking away feeling good when it came to talking with oikawa.

         so the pause felt heavy,    necessary,    even.     the silence was thick in his throat before he spoke cautiously,        ‘    i need your advice.    ’      needing something from him had not served tobio well in the past,   so this may very well prove a fruitless endeavour,     but still   -       ‘    please.   it’s about - hinata.   ’

(fugaku is a very disciplined character and as clan leader/ future clan leader, his duties came first, his training, etc., perhaps falling in love was never in the plan, but an arranged marriage for the sake of the clan was.)

i'm curious -- do you think lev is going to try and learn russian OR whether there's any cultural influence from his russian parent? :o

he does eventually learn russian! he gets proficient in college, and will later become a motivational speaker in english, russian, and japanese. he speaks all of them w his speeches, altho english is the main one! 

but that aside, he does have some cultural influence in terms of cooking! every two weeks or so, if he can, his dad cooks some kind of russian food! lev doesn’t know how to make it, he doesn’t know what it’s called, but all he knows is that it tastes good. that’s about the extent of it - they don’t go through with any russian traditions as his dad doesn’t carry his traditions over to his children. his dad practices them on his own, but alisa & him don’t!
