A seasonal reference for you all! In the video game “Castlevania: Symphony of the Night”, two Famliars were excised from the US release of the game: The “Half Fairy” and “Nose Demon”. Functionally identical to their counterparts Faerie and Demon, they were removed mostly due to their redundancy and because most of their uniqueness came from the Japanese audio the international release lacks. The Nose Demon is, naturally, a little reference to Yatterman!
In the Japanese release, both it and the regular Demon share the same voice actor: Joji Yanami, voice of our beloved Boyacky! Both demons attack with elemental spear attacks as their level increases, but their main feature is that in one area of the castle a secret passage can be accessed only by either devil striking at an out of the way switch.
Before doing so, the demons will muse about it... and in the Japanese version, at least, Nose Demon makes sure that the button isn’t hit without a classic “Pochittona” first! However, this isn’t the only time such a thing happens in the Devil Castle...
In the PS2 title “Castlevania: Curse of Darkness”, the player can raise various monsters for their own use to aid them in combat and help reach items and other secrets. The Fairy Innocent Devil can eventually become the Proboscis Fairy-- proboscis being another word for nose-- yet another joke based monster. With a big pink nose and those crooked “ears” on its cap, along with that exposed pot belly, there’s no mistaking who this Fairy is meant to evoke! Sadly, Joji Yanami doesn’t voice this creature.
Like the Nose Demon before it, this large-nosed sprite really has one purpose in the game, and most players will want to raise a Fairy for it: a single secret button can be found in game, and after a little debate, the sprite decides it’s time to hit the button! Unfortunately for player character Hector, doing so makes a large bomb appear which blasts away the wall... and him, covering him with soot from head to toe!
Said bomb is also the Proboscis Fairy’s special offensive attack. While incredibly powerful, the bomb doesn’t take sides- it will hurt Hector in combat just as much as it does any monster! While the cartoon skull on the bomb is a cute unqiue design, the Menu icon that represents the skill Skull Bomb is pretty much the classic skull design from Yatterman!
