When they are both unexpectedly popular Dr Seuss characters that had a complete rewrite of their characters for better or worse that led to tween girls swooning over them 🔛🔝
Happy Dr. Seuss Day, everyone!
I decided to draw the majority of my Seussical-verse cast in my best attempt at Seuss's own art style, using the original illustrations as references. The majority of them are based on their original designs, but Mrs. Mayor and Hannah are based on background Whos, and Schmitz is a combination of his original design and the Grandfather Yook from The Butter Battle Book.
As for why the Cat's not in the picture?
Reality reason: I wanted to make sure I could get all my favorite characters in the image and forgot to find a spot for him.
In-universe reason: He's the one who took it!

Jojo - Seussical
No one else remains on the stage, except for a lone child in a foggy background. Their is a fragrant boiling pot a little ways away, to their right were an elephant and birds’ fading cries, and in front of them is the corpse of a rotting cat. They are isolated and helpless as the spotlight’s attention stays transfixed on them - but they must finish the story, the show must go on.
Went on a little side quest and wondered about a bad ending for Seussical. This is just my interpretation of that kind of end!!
Chibi design of Jojo
Anyway, I finally got to finish my character design of Jojo! It took a lot of deliberation on how I would present this kid, but I took a lot of inspiration from the book and their solo. : D
Key takeaways
- Jojo's design is heavily inspired by their song, McElligott's Pool. There's a lot of fish elements, including: red fish, blue fish, and the pet fish from the Cat in the Hat book.
- They have heterochromia, which represents a split between what the child sees (their Thinks and the ordinary world), since I consider The Boy and Jojo to be the same person.
- The singular spirals in their eyes can be interpreted however you like! But I made this attribute due to Jojo's playing of the yoyo in the book - Horton Hears a Who.
- As for the colour pallete, it contrasts each other for a while, with the cold shades being more dominant than the warmer. It shows the inner conflict of Jojo's character.
- Their colour pallete contrasts and compliments important characters in Seussical. A common example - the Cat in the Hat and Horton. The Cat's most notible colour is red, which contrasts Jojo's blue. As for Horton, who's color is grey, compliments Jojo.
- While Jojo's color is blue, the Who's take on warmer tones (orange & yellow). Jojo's blue color is to help the viewer spot the kid easily in a crowd of Whos, while also showcasing the conflict between Jojo and their parents through its shades.
- Something I notice is that Jojo is a little similar to the pet fish in the Cat in the Hat story. And the fact that Jojo's song centered on fish and the sea, which is - in the animalistic terms of predator and prey - is quite an intriguing factor of Jojo's relationship with the Cat in the Hat.
- fun fact! In one of their pockets, Jojo carries a yoyo, a toy they are skilled with.
Anyways, that's it for my rant! I nearly fell asleep because I was writing this at midnight. I hope you enjoy my version of Jojo! They're my favourite character in Seussical (๑>ᴗ<๑).
