One of my favorite textbooks from my favorite classes. We talked about our definition of poetry, read lots of different poet’s Ars Poeticas and spent a lot of time talking about artistry and it was generally wonderful.

After Sebald: Essays and Illuminations - Full Circle Editions
Edited by Jon Cook Contributors: Gillian Beer, John Coetzee, Jon Cook, Tacita Dean, Tess Jaray, Richard Long, Robert Macfarlane, Clive Scott, Will Self & Ali Smith
A collection of essays and other texts by eleven internationally acclaimed writers, critics and artists.
Over a decade after his death W.G. Sebald remains a major presence in world literature. He has a devoted readership in many different countries. This lively and accessible collection offers a series of different illuminations on why Sebald’s work continues to fascinate. Follow Ali Smith as she gets loosed in the translation of his work. Discover with Robert Macfarlane the arguments for and against Sebald’s reputation. Find out from Will Self why British readers might find him a ‘good German’. Think with John Coetzee about the recurrent psychological crisis that haunts Sebald’s imagination. These are just a few of the many discoveries, insights, and imaginative responses that this collection offers its readers. This is the book that readers of Sebald, new or old, need to take with them as they journey through his work. It speaks of and to the different experiences involved in reading Sebald, whether responding to the relation between word and image, or the question of what can and cannot be remembered, or the resonant character of voice and voices, or the strange networks and connections that make up Sebald’s texts. And then there are personal memories by Tess Jaray of working with Sebald, Tacita Dean's own version of Sebaldian connectedness and an enigmatic memorial by Richard Long.
The book is edited and has an introduction by Jon Cook, a Professor of Literature and Director of the Centre for Creative and Performing Arts at the University of East Anglia, who was for a number of years a friend and colleague of W.G. Sebald.
What fills your passion bucket?
What fills your passion bucket? #passion #inspiration #purpose
Passion, noun: strong and barely controllable emotion. (Oxford English Dictionary) What do you think of when you hear the word passion? You probably think of romance, love, a passion for someone who makes your heartbeat escalate. I love this definition of passion, a strong and barely controllable emotion. Passion isn’t just for lovers though. Passion is for the driven, the convinced, those of us…

Social media and the thief of comparison
Social media and the thief of comparison #purpose #comparison #joy #lifelesson
“Comparison is the thief of joy.” – Theodore Roosevelt It’s easy to compare yourself to others, especially with social media today. What we often forget is that Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter, and Facebook don’t tell the whole story; they’re only the highlight reels of people’s everyday life. Social media is the new fairy tale. I’ve found myself mindlessly scrolling through social media posts and…

Closing chapters in your life
Closing chapters in your life #purpose #lifelesson
Do you ever feel like you’re stuck revisiting the same chapter in your life? I love reading. Sometimes I’ll skip ahead a chapter or two to see if I can get an idea where the story is going. The problem is I have to keep my place where I was reading. So, I stick my fingers in between the pages to keep track and fold the pages over as I glance ahead. As much as I want to read ahead, the pages…

Passion is the suffering of your dreams
Passion is the suffering of your dreams #dreams #goals #passion #settinggoals
Passion is a powerful force, especially when it comes to pursuing your dreams. Passion drives us to love and to defend, to hone our crafts and pursue what’s most important to us. The English word passion comes from the Latin word passio, which means suffering. Passio finds its roots in the earlier Latin word pati, meaning “to suffer,” the same word that we use as the base for patience. Being…
