my favorite things. ever. are simple phrases that, under the tremendous context one is already acquainted with, pack a punch. a moral or lesson learned, a metaphor to apply to everything you’ve gathered, or even something familiar. it brings a sense of finality. and it hits especially hard with either the power or peaceful nature it is delivered. it’s amazing to me how a simple construction of words can give one goosebumps. frisson.

such examples (imo) include “this place is not a place of honor” from the Transuranic (radioactive) Waste Isolation Pilot Plant message, “no day shall erase you from the memory of time” by Virgil for the 9/11 museum, “cogito ergo sum” by AM from IHNMAIMS, “maybe a fox” from Maybe a Fox by Kathi Appelt and Alison McGhee, “i placed my fate into the hands of random gods, and now i must endure it to the end” and “i struggle to accept being a bug” from Rainworld, and many many more.

I didn’t know Will You Snail? by Jonas Tyroller had a message like this, even after my 8+ playthroughs. i replayed it again today after 3 years since my initial hyperfixation in 2022 and can only describe what i feel as shock and awe. this phrase, when applied to everything you learn about the game, translates perfectly.

ohhh now that i mentioned him once i gotta put you onto Squid from the game "Will You Snail?"

Same old same old "massive super AI hates humanity and wants them all dead" but he's really silly about it? WYS is a platformer where he's actively trying to kill you and predict your moves to hinder your progress, all while commenting on your gameplay at the same time 👀

also he's bright pink and i love him dearly 🫶 literally one of my blorbos Ever and one of the ones i keep coming back to...

i just finished watching part 1 of 8-BitRyan's playthrough, and have also listened to lots of his dialogue lines...omg. he's such a goober!!! true cartoon supervillain-level personality with all the theatrics to match, and yet he's actually dangerous too...oh dear, i think you're getting me with this one 🙈💖 how dare you send me a cute goofy awful sentient AI with a German accent!!! do you know what you've unleashed??? 😂 i am astonished to learn that Will You Snail is the result of one dev's work, with everything from coding to voice acting!! Jonas Tyroller is a super talented dude, and it's awesome to see that he gives so much game-making advice to indie devs over on YouTube 🥰 the gameplay looks so addictive, and has such a lovely aesthetic!! it reminds me a little of an old favourite game, Thomas Was Alone...especially with all the melancholy lore behind such an innocent-seeming game 👀 gah, i am so so bad at these kinds of games, but i am definitely gonna play it ASAP 🙈💖 what an adorable blorbo!!!! i just know you could make him change his mind about humans 🥰 or perhaps you're his special exception, hm? 😉

🦑 Will You Snail? 2022 Art Dump 9 (finale!) [ first - prev ]

⚠️[boss, lore, and post-game spoilers!!]⚠️

and finally, we have some holiday funsies (and some art i almost forgot i drew but memory kicked in)!! somehow someway there was a pumpkinification(??) of the wys cast for halloween of 2022 to post on my deviantart. very fun and maybe last-minute idea but it’s still a favorite (it might also relate to if we did or didn’t get to carve them that year but i can’t remember) :]. i was also slowly getting into AURORA at this time so i thiinkk… *checks deviantart description* yup. I drew it to ‘all is soft inside’, which is funny because her and jonas’ pronunciations of ‘universe’ are similar. that was enough to get my mind whirring at the time <3. at one point i was over at my friend’s house and there was a comedically-timed death interrupting them when they started heading to the water pump room, and i made a comic about it for fun. very neat! next are misc squid doodles; one experimenting with magma again (<333) and the other taking on a spookier and vengeful aesthetic. gotta love our squid angst and hatred. heart emoji.

lastly and also finally (i took my time explaining those this time. it’s the end afterall!), is the christmas celebration! traditional art jumpscare!!! with all the bosses :D (i told you i’de show them all some love). i drew these lovely doodles on offwhite paper in a separate room at my grandparents’ because they had christmas music blaring in the living room (and i didn’t value conversation at the time). i swear i had another page but for now that is lost to time 😔 (i’ll get it later maybe. part 10???). also helpy’s getting a soccerball but it’s very faint so whoops

but then, again lastly and finally, a digitalization of that lower-page drawing! with a speedpaint!! with notes as i go along :D!! and custom Will You Snail winter music because it got a winter update ^_^!!! i dont remember if all the bosses actually got hats but it was funny so i drew it (<< sumup of me sometimes). but yeah :]! big pop-off celebration is a(n honestly rather old) speedpaint (but it captures the era so whatever and you get to see me draw)!! its a very good vibe, trust. i just watched it and its good! i was playing around with kinemaster at the time too so thats fun.

Will You Snail an excellent platformer and support debate

Will You Snail? unconventional platformer, should it have native port for Linux or Steam Play with Windows PC? This is the predicament of indie developer Jonas Tyroller. Due to make it's way to Steam this year. Will You Snail? is an unconventional platformer about outsmarting a talkative AI. Now dropping its first official gameplay trailer while announcing its release for 2021. You play as a snail going up against an evil AI called Squid. Who also tries to predict your movement and places traps in real-time in order to stop you. According to the developer, you "...uncover the dark secrets of the simulation. And jump your way through a short yet unique experience about artificial intelligence and the future of humanity." It's like Super Meat Boy but more challenging, you know, since the AI wants to kill you. This all sounds interesting and the gameplay caught my attention. So I reached out to Jonas Tyroller for some details regarding Linux support. Since, "Will You Snail? is made in Game Maker Studio 2. And is already playable on Linux using Steam Play." This is an option for support but not a native build. Therefore Jonas is concerned about the "problems I'll encounter with the port." Particularly since modern game engines are usually a couple of clicks from a native port. This means he will work on figuring out any bugs and do his best on a platform that's not very familiar. Either way, when it comes to Linux support said, "I'll very likely give it a shot." Developer Jonas Tyroller, previously working on the city building game ISLANDERS as part of Grizzly Games. Which also ended up getting Linux support with Mac and Windows PC. Now he's working solo, documenting the entire development process of Will You Snail? on YouTube.

Will You Snail? - Early Trailer

The development started in March of 2018. "I wanted to make a small rage game to see if I could make it go viral. And have a bunch of content creators scream at it. That’s why I came up with the most annoying mechanic I could possibly think of. Where a prediction algorithm predicts your next moves ahead of time. And spawns traps right where you are about to go. To my surprise, the interactions with the AI (if you can call it that) were way more fun than I thought. So I kept expanding on the concept, eventually deciding to turn it into a full-on commercial release." The development is going through lots of ups and downs. Since then, it finally seems to be close to the finishing line. The trailer closes with a somewhat ironic "Maybe coming 2021". Pointing to the many delays the game has already gone through. Turns out that making a full Will You Snail? game as a solo developer can be a pretty lengthy process. One that is easy to underestimate. "I very strongly believe that we can make 2021!", Jonas insists in the comment section. Then stating, "The end of the trailer is just a safety precaution." Will You Snail? will be relatively short (~4 hours). But going head to head with a cheeky, talkative AI seems to be something people clearly have some excitement for. As games like Portal have already proven. The comment section under the trailer seems to support that with comments like: "Grab your 'Been waiting for so long' Ticket here."

Launch and Demo:

The developer also states that he's quite nervous about the upcoming Will You Snail? launch. While hoping he can deliver on the seemingly high expectations. So far, only a few selected playtesters have played the game. If you don't count the fairly popular, free demo on itch (Windows PC using Wine). Which is excellent with fluid mechanics. Linux players can run the game using "wine Will You Snail - Winter Demo 2019.exe". This also includes controller support. So enjoy. As for how the development of Will You Snail? goes, only time will.
