Was really touched by a comment that @dr-jonathan-fanshawe made that they really liked this art of mine from 2022, so I decided to redraw it! I didn’t think I improved this much, but wow!

Every time I blink there's some new Jon, John, or Johannes taking up space in my head. I plan to add to it by finally sitting down and reading through Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell in the coming year. Still missing a Johanna, though.

My Ranking of all of Jonah Magnus' Statement Correspondances From Favorite to Least

This ranking is Exclusively my own opinions. You are entitled to your own. Feel free to leave them in the comments. 1) Jonathan Fanshawe: A Jonathan Harker inspired icon. The only person in the podcast to tell Jonah Magnus to fuck off (abeit in a 19th century manner) and both 1) survive and 2) not become an avatar. Man just wanted to help out his patient and has my respect 2) Albrecht von Closen: Love an Eye avatar. He's curious. He likes old books. His wife plays the pianoforte. He's a father of at least two boys. And he called Jonah "Dearest" which none of his other letter writers did. Make of that what you will. His death is a tragedy brought about directly by Jonah's actions. Underrated king. 3) Barnabas Bennet: Yes, his death was a tragedy but the man himself? Kind of annoying. What we know about him is that he doesn't have many friends, went to Egypt once, and doesn't pay his debts. Then he sassed Lukas about it when Jonah specifically told him not to do that. Sad but... it is what it is 4) Sampson Kempthorne: An actual person who existed. His statement from what I can tell doesn't really say much about Jonah's story, it's more about Smirke. But what we know about Kempthorne is that he's classist af. That's it, the whole shebang 5) And finally Robert Fucking Smirke. I HATE this man with the burning fire of a thousand suns. He is my Jurgen Leitner. He is the proto Jurgen Leitner. Every single problem in the entire podcast can be traced, one way or another back to him. The Eyepocalypse? Who introduced Jonah Magnus to the fears. Martin being tortured in the Lonely? Who introduced the Lukases to the fears. Who named the fears? Who decided to build a network of spooky tunnels under London like some sort of Tory Mole. The man created, not one, but two separate sets of spooky tunnels. (one just killed you if you went into it, unless you're Gerry). He did human experimentation- cannonically he experimented on prisoners. And it took him until 1867 to say "huh, maybe Jonah's affiliated with the Eye". He literally designed Millbank and then let Jonah at it like his own personal dollhouse. If this version of Smirke is in heaven then I will know that God is an undiscerning individual. I have Smirke's address and here it is, so I can dox this dead architect: 81 Charlotte Street, Fitzrovia & Regent's Park, London, W1T 4PP, London Borough of Camden. In short he is not only my least favorite of Jonah's letter writing associates but my least favorite character in TMA.

While most of the "dear Jonah" letters are so queer to me. I do not think it is the case with idiot man, tory ass, pathetic asshole, Robert Smirke instead I fully belive that somehow Jonah tricked this man for years into believing Jonah Magnus was a perfectly good little christian boy.

I mean Robert was a christian conservative, is one even in his last letter and the way he writes to Jonah is not like the others, there is no desperation like Barnabas, affection like Albrech and the betrayal is so different from Jonathan's (I'm terminating our friendship AND INTIMACY). Robert sounds like a disappointed dad. And it is weirdly patronizing. (To a man he suspects can kill him nevertheless) Giving good christian advice for his younger friend as if said friend just needs his light. Is somehow more self-absorved than Jonah (Jonah never seems to belive other people see him as the center of the universe, he is the most important person of his life and only cares about himself but he is not expecting people to also care about him, if anything Jonah sees other people as either tools or opponents but not followers or admirers, he uses all of his deep connections and even when he "misses" Barnabas is not for the admiration).

Smirke divided the fears in 14 and his self-confidence it was true was so big that he made it a reality. And in the end was mocked for it. Not only that but another huge difference between how he feels betrayal versus how Jonathan Fanshawe does is that Smirke does not care about the prisoners only about Jonah's profane ritual. Smirke projected the panopticon. He was okay with tormenting all those poor souls because they were criminals. Jonathan was going to be a prison doctor and when he refuses he says he pities and worries about the Milbank prisoners.

That's to say I HATE hate hate hate Robert Smirke. But also I cannot stop finding him seing Jonah as his good christian protegee who is serious, honest, straight and the perfect georgian christian so funny. Jonah has built a TEMPLE for the Eye, Robert acknowledges it and is still "repent my son, be my prodigal child". Lol what a loser. I normally feel bad when characters die but I laughed so hard when Jon said Jonah killed Smirke with eldrish heart attack (I like to think he sent Smirke some creepy visions). Like what was he expecting? Fucking loser.
