Just took a closer look at El’s “death” scene and realized: only the men’s reactions are given any weight. Only Mike, Hopper, Lucas, Dustin, and Will are screaming. Not Max, her best friend. Not Joyce, her mother. Both of those women only give brief blank stares. Robin and Steve, neither of whom really knew El, get longer reaction closeups than Max or Joyce. And we get zero reaction closeup from Jonathan, her brother. Lucas and Dustin do care deeply for her but were nowhere near as close with her as the Byers family who lived with her for a whole year; in what world are their reactions stronger than Joyce’s or Jonathan’s? Joyce, for whom the loss of a child has canonically been her worst nightmare since the very start of the show, spent the whole season worrying about her son and now she is watching her daughter commit s*icide and isn’t screaming her damn head off, nor do we ever see her or Jonathan or Will mourn her 18 months into living in the same cabin she once lived in? WTF IS THIS????
