What You Were

I have a battle going on for favorite band of the past five years. I have favorite classic bands that have been around for ages, but for new acts it comes down to two: Dragonette and The Drums. Both bands are extremely talented, play great live shows, and have MANY highly rated songs in my playlists. By the numbers, Dragonette leads the 5 star war with three songs, while The Drums have two. But one of those two was my best song of the year for 2012 (and technically the current reigning champ), so I’m featuring “What You Were” today.

Brooklyn based band The Drums are currently made up of Jonny Pierce, Jacob Graham and Connor Hanwick. A fourth member, Adam Kessler, left the band after the first album. Jonny and Jacob met as summer camp friends when they were 12. Years later they formed a couple of bands together before ending up with the successful concept that is The Drums in 2009.

Critical acclaim followed in 2010 when the band was shortlisted as one of the 15 acts for the BBC Sound of 2010, an annual poll of music critics to find the most promising new talent. London’s New Musical Express’s first issue of 2010 also named them the number one top tip for the year; and Pitchfork Media’s 2009 readers poll named them “Best Hope for 2010.”

“What You Were” comes from The Drums 2nd full length album, the excellent Portamento released in 2011. I’m definitely hoping album #3 is in the works!

Live Review: Bloc Party at Terminal 5

On August 9th at Terminal 5, the British indie-rock band Bloc Party played the final show of their three day New York tour. The crowd trickled in to the Upper West Side venue, Terminal 5, jam-packing the three separate floors and mood-lit roof deck. The balconies were swarming with people overlooking the stage.

Brooklyn-born band The Drums, kicked off the night with their unique blend of simplistic indie-rock. It was hard to take your eyes off lead singer Jonathan Pierce's little dance steps and twirls. The band had a great sound, boasting strong guitars but it was their spirit that was the highlight and certainly set the mood of the night.

The crowd waited in anticipation for Bloc Party, returning after a three-year hiatus, the audience welcomed lead singer Kele Okereke and the band with an uproar of enthusiasm and applause. Okereke opened the set with "Octopus" and filled the space with loud rock. This was followed by a string of songs such as "Positive Tension," "Banquet" and "So Here We Come."

Considering it was their third consecutive performing night, their vibe and energy was as strong as ever. You could see girls dancing from the corners and hands swaying in the air. The laser and light show was phenomenal, perfectly synchronized with the earth-shaking beat. As the concert progressed, the crowd grew more exuberant and the first floor became crowded with a smoky haze filling the air. Okereke made sure the audience felt like part of the show. At many points, especially during the populat hit “Modern Love,” the audience was chanting the lines before the lead singer put his lips to the microphone. The performance dwindled with two encores and finally ended withthe hard rocked "Helicopter." Overall, the concert was enjoyed by all attendees.
