A Love Story of Sorts
This isn't your conventional boy meets girl type of story, though I do have one of those (though I will not waste your time with that story), but instead this is the story of how I fell for the Toronto Raptors.
Coming from South America, soccer was always the #1 sport, I had very little exposure to any other sport. MY father preferred basketball, but he never really watched it when I was younger. As time passed I started to casually play basketball, enjoying the sport, but still never watching it.
Fast forward to December 30th, 2006. This was my first year in Toronto, I had heard very little about the Toronto Raptors, mainly comments about how they were a joke. At this point of the season I wouldn't have blamed anybody for saying that, they were 13-18, T.J Ford and Chris Bosh were injured, it seemed like another early Summer would come to them. Anyways, I was bored on the night of December 30th, in the midst of my Christmas Break. Flipping through channels, for some reason I stopped at a Raptors vs Grizzlies game. Perhaps it was the shiny blue and yellow floor that the Memphis Arena had? The Dancers? The huge lead that the Grizzlies had? I'm not sure what it was, but I stayed tuned.
The first quarter had just ended, 39-18 lead for the Grizzlies. "What a joke of a team!", I thought to myself. It was like a train wreck, I couldn't look away.
In the 2nd quarter, the Raptors suddenly changed. They adjusted to the up-tempo style that the Grizzlies were playing and slowly , but surely chipped away at the lead.
The Spanish connection between Jose Calderon and Jorge Garbajosa was spectacular that night, they never gave up even after being down by 21 points. I really liked the attitude that they had. Even Darrick Martin played well that night getting 10 assists.
By the 4th quarter the Raptors had gained a 1 point lead, suddenly Mike Miller hit a couple of 3 pointer and the Grizzlies gained the lead and Memphis never looked back. Despite it being a lose, by the time the game was over I no longer saw them as a joke. I had become a Toronto Raptor fan over night. I did not miss a single game after that night, the Raptors went on to turn the season around and made the playoffs.
