Another person talking about the quality of the friesians I know so if you don't want to read this you can skip it but this has been gnawing on me and the recent teaser didn't help so I'm posting it.
Look, I was pretty chill with the new friesians when they first came out, obviously no breed will be perfect or please everyone and even my favorite breeds I often have things I wish they'd done differently, gaits I find off, coat colors I side eye, etc. But, I was generally pleased with the new friesian particularly compared to the first remake, which quite frankly I hated on sight, and thought it was a generally solid touch up of the original, which is the only generation one horse I still own.
I had noted that the JWH was stunning and almost certainly an outlier in breed quality that we wouldn't see become the norm for some time and as Heidrun was a one off they could do whatever they wanted with them so they wouldn’t necessarily be a good indicator. However, seeing the gotland ponies and this newest teaser photo I have to admit I'm wondering more and more about what happened with the new friesians. Like just how rushed the team was, and why SSO decided to release them because while the friesians, at least to me, fit in stylistically with breeds released pre-JWH, particularly the marwaris and new quarter horses, they just seem kind of odd when sandwiched between the new wilds and the gotland ponies and it just seems like a weird stumble, particularly when I didn’t know anyone who was expecting any new horses until 2021 after the JWH release, but maybe I’m just out of the loop, so it’s not like they had pressures from the audience to get this horse out.
This isn't to say I now hate the friesians and they're a terrible breed and it's true the gotland ponies haven't been seen in action yet so maybe things will crop up there. I do feel like the friesians could have had some more kinks worked out though, particularly when it comes to the stiffness of some movements, and that, while it may be early to say this, with the current direction they seem to be going it appears to me that the friesians are the outlier in breed quality and not the JWHs.
