GENTEFIED executive producer/co-star America Ferrera, creator/co-writer Marvin Lemus, co-writer Linda Yvette Chavez, and executive producer Aaliyah Williams discuss the web series with Justin Simien, Josefina López and Nancy Meza following its screening at Sundance Next Fest 2017 at the Theatre at the Ace Hotel in Los Angeles on Saturday, August 12.
Simply Maria, or the American Dream (excerpts) - When she was a teen, Josefina López was greatly moved by a play she saw. Inspired to become a playwright, she wrote a play about a young Hispanic girl's struggle to find her own sense of self and freedom. The girl does this by challenging the traditional part of her heritage and traveling a road that helps her discover her own truth and direction. Lessons give steps to make up stories, write dialogue and teach how to develop characters in a play or story. Themes: Transformation, Freedom & Oppression and The Human Family.

DALIA: When will she understand? She thinks I can't live without a man. She says I can't keep one, much less feed one. 'Un hombre, solo uno' she claims with pride and righteousness. I tell her, 'I'm sorry for you. You didn't have a choice. Let me pick and choose, enough already, let me have a voice, in the way I live my life.' Oh, my mother, when will she understand? That I love her and that she didn't screw up. 'Then why did you turn up this way?' Oh, my mother, when will she understand that with the life I live I celebrate hers too. Where did I get this lust for life 'It must be from your father.' 'No, from you… All that lust you couldn't express, all those flavors you couldn't taste. I will, for you.'
Act 1, Boyle Heights by Josefina López
