Diving into the new world.

Yesterday I finally received my parcel with "The Lost One: The Life of Peter Lorre" by S. D. Youngkin! At first I, of course, opened a photo section. I didn't expect to see anything new, cause I had been scouring Tumblr and other sites for PL's various photos. But then:

The description says: "Die Ohrfeige" ("Box on the Ear") in Ein der Überraschungen (An Evening of Surprises), Theater in the Josefstadt, Vienna, 1927. Left to right : Egon Friedell, Karl Ehmann, Fritz Strehlen, Hans Ziegler, Peter Lorre and Rudolf Beer; in front, Gisela Werbezirk.

Look at his right brow! It's already giving performance of its own!

I started searching for a digital version, but, alas, to no avail.

The second one that caught my attention: Grete Witzmann and Peter Lorre kneel in prayer in Die Stunde des Absterbens (The Hour of Dying Off), Theater in the Josefstadt, Vienna, 1927.

Haven't found a digital copy as well. Maybe there are high resolution scans. Let me know! ❤️‍🩹

The Spanish Synagogue (Hebrew: בית הכנסת הספרדי) is the newest synagogue in the area of the so-called Jewish Town in Prague Josefov, yet paradoxically, it was built at the place of the presumably oldest synagogue, Old School (also known as Altshul). Španělská synagoga (původně Templ v Dušní ulici) je nejmladší synagogou v tzv. židovském městě na pražském Josefově. Byla postavena v maurském slohu. Die Spanische Synagoge ist eine Synagoge im Stadtteil Josefstadt in Prag. Sie wurde in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts im maurischen Stil erbaut. La synagogue espagnole a été construite en 1868 à l'emplacement de la plus ancienne synagogue Altshul de Prague qui datait du XIIe siècle et qui a été détruite en 1867. Elle a été conçue dans un style mauresque. Испанская синагога — одна из синагог еврейского квартала Йозефов, достопримечательность города Праги. Своё название получила благодаря тому, что построена в неомавританском стиле.

"Restaurant at the Old Synagogue"

Located in Josefov in Prague, Czech Republic.

Josefov (also Jewish Quarter; German: Josefstadt) is a town quarter and the smallest cadastral area of Prague, Czech Republic, formerly the Jewish ghetto of the town. 

In 1850, the quarter was renamed "Josefstadt" (Joseph's City) after Joseph II who emancipated Jews with the Toleration Edict in 1781. Two years before Jews were allowed to settle outside of the city, so the share of the Jewish population in Josefov decreased, while only orthodox and poor Jews remained living there.

Most of the quarter was demolished between 1893 and 1913 as part of an initiative to model the city on Paris. What was left were only six synagogues, the old cemetery, and the Old Jewish Town Hall (now all part of the Jewish Museum in Prague )

As all Josefov was re-built at the beginning of the 20th century, nowadays the dominant architectural style there is Art Nouveau.
