“St. Elmo’s Fire” TV Series in the Works

NBC and Sony TV are developing a modern day TV series adaptation of St. Elmo’s Fire. The project is being written by Josh Berman. The 1985 film featured a group of friends just out of college and struggling with adulthood.

Lytton is in fine form here, with the most deliciously dry ride cymbal in the biz and simply feral stick work. Berman presents a nice blend of conventional trumpet sounds alongside some good extended techniques, ultimately leaning a bit more toward the former. And Roebke moves things along nicely and keeps the sonic spectrum full with his vaguely (at times) William Parker-like approach to a sort of free walking/comping kind of role; great stuff all around.

A Dance and a Hop, Josh Berman’s last LP, was a paragon of pith. The Chicago-based cornetist is no stranger to free improvisation, but for that record he penned 11 brief themes elastic enough to be enhanced by three players resolving the material at the same time. The record’s success was due not only to Berman’s ripe for completion writing and piquant playing, but to bassist Jason Roebke and drummer Frank Rosaly’s imaginative responses to Berman’s telegraphic themes. But good things never last, and Rosaly exited the trio not long after the record’s release in order to move to Amsterdam. Trio Discrepancies is the culmination of what came next.

Faced with an upcoming European tour, Berman took a nervy step. He asked Paul Lytton, an English first-generation free improviser, to join the trio. This isn’t totally without precedent, since Lytton has previously played with another Chicagoan, Ken Vandermark. But Berman comes from a more recent cohort of players; this is a generation-jumping maneuver on a par with the Mekons recruiting Dick Taylor of the Pretty Things. But look how that turned out; pretty good, right? And so did this. Lytton brings plays superbly, of course, but his excellence comes at a cost. His presence transforms the trio into something quite different, sufficiently so that Berman stopped calling the group his trio and opted for three-way billing. Instead of playing finding ways to inhabit and complete Berman’s tunes, this trio starts from scratch. The LP’s two side-long tracks are excerpted from concerts played in Italy and Norway, and both sides evolve in a linear fashion while maintaining plenty of space for simultaneous exchange. Space is a key component in this music; while each player contributes robustly, their playing stands out like quick brush strokes on a broad, empty canvas.  

“Padova” tells the band’s story in the first few minutes. It starts with a close clinch between cornet and bass, all popping valve effects and bright harmonics. Lytton bides his time, but from his first cymbal stroke the music changes. Lytton’s muted beats and isolated clouds of vibrating metal owe nothing to jazz drumming, but they set Berman and Roebke up for a moment of wry, swinging lyricism before the music branches into something no less propulsive but considerably more abstract. Each player seems to be on their own, pursuing independent, darting phrases. But like an atom made from tiny electrons and the forces that they exert upon each other, the three men’s actions add up to something quite solid.
