This is Our Youth
There is so much that can be perceived from a black and white photo of a person. Slight characteristics noticed through physical attributes as well as hints of personality through the subtle hints in the image's grey attributes. In 1979, photographer Richard Avedon focused his creative talents on what he called the "Western Project". For five years this project resulted in images of 762 people including working class people, farmers and housewives on larger than life prints. "The collection identified a story within his subjects of their innermost self, a connection Avedon admits would not have happened if his new sense of mortality through severe heart conditions and aging hadn’t occurred. Avedon visited and traveled through state fair rodeos, carnivals, coal mines, oil fields, slaughter houses and prisons to find the right subjects to reveal...The project was embedded with Avedon’s goal to discover new dimensions within himself, from a Jewish photographer from out East who celebrated the lives of famous public figures to an aging man at one of the last chapters of his life to discovering the inner-worlds, and untold stories of his Western rural subjects."
Many of my projects both as an artist and photographer have centered on the question of one's identity and how people can be influenced by their social surroundings. The primary focus of this photo project is to not only pay homage to Richard Avedon and his visual style but also his natural ability to unveil his subjects' true self through his stark contrasty images. My aim is to capture both the innocence and stylistic independence exuded by teens through their fashion which has been inspired by the music they listen to. I am constantly intrigued by the teenagers I see roaming around town on a daily basis and the wide array of expressive choices showcased as well as a slight impression of their personalities conveyed. If interested in participating in this project please contact us at [email protected] . Please pass along to those you think might be best suited for such a project. There will be a visual exhibition both online as well as a site to be determined locally to showcase the images captured during this project.
Congratulations to @OurNameIsFun on your big night..Had the opportunity to hang w the guys for a quiet moment out at #Sasquatch
