i feel  like  with  the  mask  comfortably  on,  reaper  is  just  a  mass  of  shadows  with  two  glowing  beacons  of  red  coronas  for  eyes.  it  must  be  difficult  &  energy  consuming  to  keep  a  humanoid  form  because  his  body  wants  to  become  smoke.  it  wants  to  disperse,  to  degrade  until  there  is  naught  but  a  whisper  of  him  left.  so  any  cosmetic  things  like  facial  features  &  structure  is  unnecessary.  (  *  i  headcanon  that  there  is  no  stretch  of  skin  visible  at  all.  those  windows  of  upper  arms  of  his  are  covered  by  leather  or  what  -  not.  absolutely  everything  is  covered  ).  this  represents  his  instability  because  reaper  should  not  exist.  he  is  in  a  perpetual  state  of  dying  &  not  dying  :  his  entire  existence  seems  a  contradiction.  he  is  neither  human  nor  monster,  he  is  simply  wrong.

when  reaper  feels  particularly  cruel  he  can   control  the  appearance  of  his  visage.  he  can  even  make  the  vague  notions  of  reyes’  features  manifest.  maybe  he’ll  get  reyes’  eyes  &  those  two  cuts  on  his  right  cheek,  but  it  will  never  be  perfect  &  it  will  never  be  alive.  it  was  always  be  rotting  &  falling  apart  because  his  default  state  is  this  clash  of  decomposition  &  rapid  regeneration. as  for  anything  spooky  or  monstrous,  those  usually  come  as  a  reflection  of  reaper’s  emotional  state  &  opinion  of  himself.  because  he  knows  he’s  wrong,  he  knows  he  should  not  be  &  it  folds  into  this  crippling  self  -  hatred   &  manifestation  of  all  those  feels  as  sharp  teeth  line  where  his  mouth  should  be  &  his  “  face  ”  disfigures  &  evolves.
