CRUEL SUMMER (2021)
1x02 – A Smashing Good Time
i think it’s really interesting that in episode 1 it did seem kate had it all, but the season has progressively shown the audience as well as kate herself that’s not true, and 1993 jeanette actually has it better than kate, even if her life isn’t as shiny (some spoilers, also mostly focused on the 93 versions of the characters
we all know kate’s mom is just terrible and prioritizes herself and her reputation over her daughter. while jeanette’s mom isn’t always great, many of her flaws (especially in 93) come from a place of wanting the best for jeanette (like her pushing jeanette to be popular because she thinks it’ll make her happy)
kate wanted to be sisters with ashley, but the feeling wasn’t mutual. derek and jeanette have a close relationship where they joke and he’s very supportive of her
i think kate’s dad is one of the best characters on the show, but he still wasn’t there for kate the moment she needed it most, whereas jeanette’s dad always stood by her side, even when it was difficult
while jamie is a lot better in 93 than in the other years, he’s still kind of a jerk and he moves on after kate goes missing pretty quickly, meanwhile jeanette went on a date with gideon, who seemed genuinely sweet and thought the world of jeanette
kate’s friends ditched her once she went missing too, and while mallory wasn’t a good friend to jeanette (and is actually better to kate in the other years) vincent has been amazing to her
and this list doesn’t even address kate’s biggest problem: martin harris
at this point in the season, we’ve seen that jeanette is really the one who has the better life, even if kate’s is a bit prettier
The Stories (and Theory) of 1x04
In this very informative episode, I've notice that the main players of episode four all had a scene where they tell another character a story. And not just any story but a story that relates to the speaker in some way. When I went back and listened to them, I realized that a lot was said in these very brief instances and wanted to break them down for anyone who wanted to read. The main people being broken down are Martin, Kate, and Ashley, Kate's step-sister. It's a long (but juicy) read. TLDR at the bottom.
Martin:
When sitting outside with Kate, he expressed to her about a family tragedy he experienced when he was a teenager. His dad committed suicide (which is why he gets jumpy around guns) and feels regret because before his father had passed, they had a fight. He also briefly spoke about Greek mythology, when they were looking at the constellations, about how Poseidon was angered by Cassiopeia because she always bragged about how beautiful she was. He says it so quickly that you barely understand the story if you're unknowledgeable about Greek mythology. The story goes that Poseidon was so bothered by Cassiopeia's vanity that he was to destroy her Kingdom by water. When Cassiopeia tried to figure out how to stop that, she was told she had to sacrifice her daughter as a peace offering to the sea gods.
"A lot of family drama," Martin ends with it.
How much do you guys think Joy saying that Kate’s predicable and that she would go to one of her friends homes played a part in her going to Harris instead.
Also the fact that she packed that bunny he gave her..
The only good parent Kate has is Rod.
Joy was really only thinking about herself, when kate and joy fought, joy was really trying to save her name. Trying to get on a talk show instead of focusing on her daughter, giving Kate that liar note.
She wasn't a good mother then she still isn't now. I mean when her daughter got saved, joy held a party ://
BET jeanette’s mom was so much less willing to believe her innocence because she sees a little bit of herself in jeanette? maybe she went through a similar kind of transformation as a teenager? Or maybe she chose differently? plus i think throughout the series we were given conflicting perspectives from both jeanette’s mom and Kate’s mom from when they were younger? i’d definitely be down for a spin-off centering around the parents from when they were teens. their town is super small, everyone is nosy and they all seem to know each others business, there’s gotta be some more secrets worth telling!
I️ find the theories about Mallory so interesting. As much as we all probably agree that Kate’s mom is the worst, that doesn’t mean she’s wrong about everything. Maybe she DOES have valid reasons to be suspicious of their friendship. The therapist also talked about how Martin isolated Kate and made her feel like he was the one person who could fulfill her needs. So is Mallory doing that to Kate (obviously on a much less extreme level)? She is intentionally making Kate rely on her or is she just being a good friend to Kate in a time of need?
