1x05 – As The Carny Gods Intended

i think it’s really interesting that in episode 1 it did seem kate had it all, but the season has progressively shown the audience as well as kate herself that’s not true, and 1993 jeanette actually has it better than kate, even if her life isn’t as shiny (some spoilers, also mostly focused on the 93 versions of the characters

we all know kate’s mom is just terrible and prioritizes herself and her reputation over her daughter. while jeanette’s mom isn’t always great, many of her flaws (especially in 93) come from a place of wanting the best for jeanette (like her pushing jeanette to be popular because she thinks it’ll make her happy)

kate wanted to be sisters with ashley, but the feeling wasn’t mutual. derek and jeanette have a close relationship where they joke and he’s very supportive of her

i think kate’s dad is one of the best characters on the show, but he still wasn’t there for kate the moment she needed it most, whereas jeanette’s dad always stood by her side, even when it was difficult

while jamie is a lot better in 93 than in the other years, he’s still kind of a jerk and he moves on after kate goes missing pretty quickly, meanwhile jeanette went on a date with gideon, who seemed genuinely sweet and thought the world of jeanette

kate’s friends ditched her once she went missing too, and while mallory wasn’t a good friend to jeanette (and is actually better to kate in the other years) vincent has been amazing to her

and this list doesn’t even address kate’s biggest problem: martin harris

at this point in the season, we’ve seen that jeanette is really the one who has the better life, even if kate’s is a bit prettier

Episode 4 of “Cruel Summer” was great but really hard to watch at times. I feel so bad for Kate and everything she went through. Not sure what this Annabelle twist is but it’s creepy.  Really like that Kate’s now friends with Mallory in the 95 timeline, and that her step-sister Ash is who she’s talking to in the chatroom.  I really like Ash too and totally sensed romantic sparks between her and Derek which is a good star-crossed pairing since he’s Jeanette’s brother. And I like too that both of them aren’t really judging Kate or Jeanette like everyone else is as that’s mirroring me and I feel for both girls.  Also Derek was super cute and dorky in this ep and loving seeing Barrett play this type of character. Can’t stand Kate’s mom though. LOL

Everything had blown up since Kate came back. Y/N didn’t know what to believe, and not picking sides had consequences.

She had talked to Jeanette only yesterday about what happened. “I don’t know who to believe okay? Kate has some solid evidence, and you can not tell me you didn’t go back to that house!”

“Just because I went to the house doesn’t mean that it was at the time of her kidnapping. In fact I swear it wasn’t!”

“I can’t believe anyone right now, J. Just leave it alone okay!”

“What do you think Derek is going to say about you not believing his little sister huh?!”

“The fact that your manipulating me makes me want to believe Kate! I’m leaving Jeanette!”

The same day she had a conversation with Kate. You see, they both had been her best friend at some point. It was difficult, and she knew that what Jeanette said was true. Derek was going to break up with her.

“Y/N? Thank you for coming.” Kate smiled. Her smile was contagious. This was the first time she had smiled in weeks, and that really made her want to believe her.

“You know that I’m stuck right now, Katie Kat. I don’t want to pick sides.”

“Y/N I get that you and Jeanette were friends, but what she did to me can’t be taken back okay? She stole my life. She stole you, she stole Jamie-“ Y/N flinched at the mention of Jamie and tears formed in her eyes.

“Yeah, it was always about Jamie, wasn’t it, Kate? I was always just some side experiment!”

“That was a mistake. We both agreed that it was a mistake, and now you’re dating her brother anyways, so why are we talking about this?”

“You know what Kate? Screw you, okay?! Just because I’m bi, doesn’t mean you should ridicule me for it, but you always did, even though you kissed me, not once, not twice, but three times! I’m out!”

Now today, Derek had asked her to meet him. She was sad. She knew what was coming. She walked into the Turner residence, looking prematurely upset. She needed to talk to Jeanette first.

“Hey, I’m really sorry about what I said yesterday, and I believe you. And before you ask me, no I’m not saying that because of your brother. I love you, Jeanette. You’re an amazing friend, and unlike Kate, you’ve never lied to me.” Jeanette pulled her into a hug.

“Thank you for believing me. Hardly anyone does. I don’t even think my parents believe me, especially my mom.”

“You don’t deserve alll of the whispers going around town, and I’m really sorry.”

“It’s fine, Y/N. Now go talk to my brother.”

Y/N took a deep breath. Even after talking to Jeanette, she was still nervous. She knocked on his door and walked in.

“Hey.” Was all she managed to say.

“Hey, um, come sit down.”

“I heard you talking to Jeanette just now. Even though you didn’t believe her at first, I’m glad that you came around.” He placed a hand on top of hers. He could tell that she was anxious.

“Are... you’re breaking up with me aren’t you?”

“Y/N, I love you, but we can’t do this right now. We both have so much stuff going on right now. I don’t want us to drift apart. I don’t want to be that couple. I’d rather just do it now, and then, maybe when we’re both ready, we can go out.”

Y/N had a teary smile on her face. “I’d, um, I’d like that. I have to go. My mom wanted me home early today, so I’m just gonna go.” She left the house without another word, just hoping that she had made the right choice siding with Jeanette, and if they ever really would get back together.

Um am I too earlier for the Cruel Summer fanfiction? Because Derek Turner deserves it.
