The night was growing late, but it seemed as if the party had no intention of coming to an end. For every person who seemed to leave, they were instantly replaced. Bodies moved in sync, shifting to the beat of music. The heat had started to get to her, too many people cramped into such a small space that Mina started winding around bodies and shaking off people who tried to draw her into yet another dance.
She was in a haze, a mixture of the alcohol and the atmosphere had settled deep within her. The further she moved away from the dancing, the cooler her skin felt. Letting out a sigh, Mina stopped briefly to pull her hair up off her sweaty neck and into a sloppy bun. Feeling far better than she had in the mix of people, she moved towards a wall, hoping to find a bathroom somewhere, to splash water on her face.
“Excuse me,” she said loudly, bumping into someone as she attempted to avoid someone else. Hopefully the bathroom, should she find it, be blessedly empty, to allow her to regain the control of her gift that she had been lacking the last couple hours. Finding a door that looked vaguely familiar, her hand gripped the handle and pushed, only to find a hallway.
Eyebrows pinching together, she looked down the darkened hallway wondering if it would take her to where she needed to go. Throwing caution to the wind, Mina took the risk of venturing further. The fact that there didn’t seem to be anyone around, was a solace to her mind. The dull roar that had been present for hours was shrinking to a soft buzz with every step.
The sounds of voices, actual voices, stopped her in her tracks. One of them was familiar, so familiar that Mina let her mind reach out and brush softly against whoever was in front of her to verify who it was. Knowing should have calmed the racing of her heart, only it made the blood rush to her ears. Pressing forward slowly, she stuck close to a wall, curious what the King was doing in the darkened halls of the Seraphim.
