Kid four being a weird little dude is so important to me.

Meanwhile he’s staring back at them, eyes wide fucking open, without blinking because geckos lick their eyes but his isn’t long enough so he just has to hold out as long as he can u til he succumbs to the blink

Isnfjdjdjdjdjsnndad like all the kids are weird in their own way but Kid Four is weird in his own special way. Just a strange little dude that each of the other kids would fight to the death for if anyone even thought of being mean to him.

When asked what they want to be/who they want to be like when they get older there is of course a lot of “Cloud! Tifa! Barret!” With even a few odder ones like Tseng and Reno thrown in, but Kid Four doesn’t even hesitate before he answers

“Cait Sith.”

They all blink. Denzel slowly asks “You mean like Reeve?”

Kid Four shakes his head. “I want to ride a giant Moogle and tell fortunes for a living.”

Cloud doesn’t even blink at that only ruffling the kid’s hair and telling him he can see if Reeve has the time to make one of the Moogles big enough to carry the kids around. (And honestly he’s relieved. He loves his friends, loves the kids, but he wants at least one of them to want a different life. To not want to be a fighter. To have the peace and opportunities available that they can be so unapologetically them without fear of what will happen to the rest of the world or if they will have the money to support themselves being a fortune teller. They will. He will make sure they will.)

anyway my consensus is yes WFA does not have to follow canon, but the attempts to engage in canon conflicts (Steph feeling insecure in Batfam, Damian vs Tim) are deeply unsatisfying if only part of the conflict is acknowledged.

The Damian vs Tim thing especially felt like Tim wank where the writers didn't want to acknowledge any reason Damian may have actually felt jealous of Tim (like!!!! That's Damian's dad that Damian sees Tim working with and being supported by! and Damian didn't get to meet his dad until he was 10 or his mom until he was 8 according to that timeline! OFC he's fucking jealous! He was raised with practically no close relationships or support!) and instead went into some boring ass "he's jealous b/c tim is so great" thing. Which like. as;dlgkj hilariously reinforced what the writers were saying (Damian is jealous b/c he keeps hearing how great tim is).

The Steph and Tim thing felt very unconvincing when Steph realistically feels like she has to prove herself... but we conveniently skate over why. She was constantly excluded from Batfam, namely by Bruce, Cass (later on), and TIM.

Tim is true-to-himself insecure in that comic (or had insecurities) but a HUGE difference between Tim and Steph in canon is that Tim was insecure and worried about being fired for essentially no reason -- he is constantly reaffirmed of his position in the Batfam even when he messes up. Steph is insecure and feels she has to prove herself for a very good reason -- she is constantly told she doesn't belong and she can't do it and it's too dangerous.

And I'm not saying a fluff webtoon has to engage in all of canon's complexity, but maybe if you want to address a complex situation in canon... actually fully address it?
