CHILDHOOD

Before Willis Todd married Catherine, he was in a toxic on/off again relationship with Sheila Haywood, a Gotham native & local doctor (and Jason's bio mom). Sheila had a big heart and would sneak into a local clinic to give lower income families medical care at a reduced cost. However one of her unauthorized/secret surgeries went awry, leading to the death of a teenage girl. The evidence against her was damning and shortly after giving birth to Jason she fled to Ethiopia to avoid arrest. This led to Willis having sole custody of Jason.

Sadly Willis' relationship with Catherine would prove just as toxic (if not even more so) than his relationship with Sheila. Willis and Catherine were both verbally abusive to one another as well as Jason. Although Catherine rarely hit Willis, both she and Willis were physically abusive as well, treating him as both their child butler and resident punching bag.

Catherine and Willis were also neglectful of Jason, spending most of their time at work, leaving Jason home with no supervision and no food. Willis worked at a local mechanic shop that was going under due to car repair chains getting more popular and Catherine worked as a waitress at a 24/7 diner. The two struggled to make ends meet, especially with rising living costs so Willis taught Jason how to steal valuable car parts and to shoplift. Sadly, despite trying to be a loyal and helpful son by stealing and selling car parts Jason rarely ever saw any of the money he earned. Much of the family's money went to bills, booze, drugs, and later Sal Maroni when his parents foolishly accepted a loan from him. Due to having no parental support, Jason taught himself how to safely dumpster dive and cook roadkill so he wouldn't starve to death.

THE DEATHS OF HIS PARENTS / ADOPTED BY BRUCE

With the interest of Maroni's loan skyrocketing, Willis became so desperate for money he became a hired gun for Two-Face. Not longer after working for Two-Face he was paid double to betray Two-Face. Two-Face is now fool, however, and Willis was swiftly killed for his betrayal. Meanwhile Catherine died of a drub overdose leaving Jason with no family, no food, and nowhere to live. Jason would spend most of his time hiding in school bathrooms or old warehouses as a means of having safe-ish places to sleep. He also came to spend a lot of time in Crime Alley, using stealing and working as other criminals' lookout as a means of getting food and money.

A few weeks after Catherine's death he learned that his mother's go to drug dealer was famous with lacing his drugs with especially volatile substances. Upon learning the man's name (Robby), he tracked the man down and pushed the unsuspecting man down a flight of stairs, killing him. He was eleven at the time.

After spending a year providing for himself, at age 12, Jason became especially bold and tried to steal the tires of a fancy car that ended up being the Batmobile. Hesitantly accepting the food Batman offered him, he would have a few random meetings/chats with Batman before accepting Batman's suggestion of going to live in Ma Gunn's School for Wayward Boys. Sadly it turned out the home was a front for training future guns for hire/mercenaries, resulting in Batman rescuing those under Ma Gunn's care. After witnessing Jason save his life by tackling an armed Ma Gunn (and processing how he had been rather attached to the boy all along), "Batman" helped Jason get a proper and safe placement with Bruce Wayne.

Although hesitant to trust most adults, Jason quickly bonded with Dick. The two loved playfully pranking one another, as well as teaming up to prank Bruce. It is with Dick's loving support he opened up to Bruce and Alfred as well. For the first time in his life Jason finally understood what a family was supposed to feel like.

Jason found out by accident that Bruce was Batman and Dick was Robin. Alfred went on a late night trip to the grocery store to avoid shopping in the snow storm coming the next morning when Jason had a nightmare. Terrified and screaming at the top of his lungs, Dick raced to check on Jason, forgetting he was partially dressed in his Robin suit. Shortly after this encounter Jason begged both Dick and Bruce to train him. After a month's worth of begging the two caved, agreeing to train him, but starting with self defense first.

However as Dick got older, he and Bruce argued more and more. Dick ended up getting his own apartment and visiting home less and less. Dick also eventually quit being Robin and passed the mantle to Dick. Seeing Dick less was the start in the strain of Jason's relationship with Bruce. To an extend Jason felt that Bruce drove his big brother away.

DYING & BECOMING RED HOOD

After becoming a bit too violent and argumentative during patrols, Jason was put on monitor duty to 're-regulate and reset.' While on monitor duty he found a picture of his birth mother, Sheila, as well as her contact info. After weeks of talking in secret he bought a plane ticket with Bruce's credit card, intent on visiting his birth mother in Ethiopia.

Sadly, unknown to Jason the whole time, Sheila was blackmailed by the Joker to lure him there. Joker had discovered Robin/Jason's secret identity and was planning to blackmail/scare Batman into sharing his secret identity by kidnapping Jason. However Jason proved resilient and resisting to Joker's torture. Fearing the Bat's wrath upon finding a near dead Robin/Jason, Joker blew up the warehouse he kept Jason in, hoping to confuse Batman long enough to make a clean getaway. Joker's explosive get away succeeded, killing both Sheila and Jason in the process.

Ra's Al Ghul who had been on a mission/bloody business trip beat Batman to the scene, stealing Jason's body and resurrecting him in a Lazarus pit. Ra's Al Ghul along with the aid of his daughter brainwashed and manipulated Jason, shaping them into a top tier weapon for the League of Assassins. Once they were confident t heir brainwashing solidified they sent him to Gotham to kill the entire batfamily, starting with Bruce. However, something about being on home turf started to slowly make his brainwashing crumble. And with Ra's Al Ghul no longer giving him daily shots to purposefully induce pit madness Jason slowly but steadily came to regain more of his memories and autonomy.

ADDITIONAL CANON DIVERGENCE NOTES

Lazarus pit madness makes it difficult to tell reality from fiction, can lead to dizziness, can cause hallucinations, trigger PTSD episodes, increase irritability, etc.

Please note that I am not saying Jason is an innocent person or that his mental conditions should excuse his violent tendencies. However I think it is vital to also remember he was abused as a child, literally came back from the dead and is a cult/brainwashing survivor. These aspects of his background make him struggle to interpret the world around him (and in turn make him an unreliable narrator).

I’m heavily against the fandom popular trope of him hating Tim and any Robin after him. Jason hates that Bruce gave Joker more people to target (aka his anger is targeted toward Bruce and Joker, not other Robins)

He has tried to kill some of the batfam before, but it was induced by the Al Ghul’s brainwashing him and inducing severe pit madness

He has a lot of childhood trauma/experiences as @/clawsextended ‘s Selina — it’s why she is one of his fave people ever (she understands him in ways Bruce never will)

destroys shipments of harder drugs such as heroin but deals and controls the market for things like marijuana and booze

controls most of Gotham’s pleasure houses and makes sure the sex workers have access to healthcare, adequate pay, etc.

kills human traffickers and other horrendous people for fun
