Opal Ring: Are you sentimental?

What motive do you have in asking this me and my boxes of every letter and card my friends have given me from elementary school through now would like to have a word with you; also WHY ELSE am I back here if not for a case of raging sentimentality.

Art Collector: What are your favourite paintings?

I’ve jokingly claimed to be able to meander through a museum and always, inevitably, find the gallery where the Turner is. The Fighting Temeraire and Campo Veccino come to mind. Seeing John Singer Sargent’s El Jaleo in person at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston was a moment. More recently—in the Before Times—I went to Italy last autumn with my mum and seeing all of the Botticellis at the Uffizi in Florence up close made me want to cry a little bit!

Swan Lake: What inspires your creative work?

Ummmmm I’m going to have to think back to when the space between my ears wasn’t a blighted wasteland like it is now (❁°͈▵°͈)

Being in nature. Listening to folks who are passionate about what they do explain their passions, regardless of medium (see: Song Exploder, Home Cooking with Samin Nosrat and Hrishikesh Hirway [who hosts Song Exploder!]). Experiencing really transcendent theater. Ocean Vuong’s IG essays, his On Being episode, Ocean generally.

29) your favorite album closer - ohhhhh I had to think about this for a second. Peace by Apocalyptica closes Worlds Collide and I think it’s such a nice way to end that album! Afterglow by Chvrches closes Every Open Eye and makes me so emotional! Every Open Eye is one of my favorite albums of all time.

4. Link your three favorite fics right now. all recently posted/updated: “the height of the waves” by mengetpegged (hockey rpf, brock boeser/elias pettersson) - first of all, iconic username. second of all, I knew like 1/3 of the way through reading this that it was gonna be The Fic for this pairing, and it delivered from beginning to end.  “growing into someone” by ratcrimes (hockey rpf, leon draisaitl/matthew tkachuk) - currently 4/5 chapters posted, rights the innumerable wrongs of nearly every other l/m fic out there, and is also just stellar in every way. “you pick me up and take me home again” by wintrs (formula 1 rpf, daniel ricciardo/max verstappen) - only 1/7 chapters up right now, but already better than literally at least 90% of this pairing. 

5. What are your fanfic pet peeves? Do they have a huge effect on whether or not you decide to read something? I answered this already but I will come up with another: when slow-burn getting-together fic is full of dramatic misunderstandings and miscommunication and then ends AS SOON AS the characters get together. like... I am not convinced that this will be a functional relationship!

20. What’s your favorite part about the fanfiction writing process? answered already but something else I love is being able to title things with song lyrics. when I write traditional fiction I have to “come up with it” “myself” or steal from like “the Bible”

38. What does your writing process look like? How chaotic is it on a scale of 1 (very tame) to 10 (you can’t handle this kind of chaos)? ....8.5. I jump between scenes, paragraphs and sentences like someone’s going to no-scope me if I leave my cursor in one place for too long.

1: What did you do in 2017 that you’d never done before? I led a bunch of group trainings and presentations to directors at work whichwas way more public speaking than I’ve done since college. Some of them were reallyscary since I wasn’t super comfortable with the subject matter myself some of the time, but I’mreally glad I was able to pull them all off and got mostly positive feedback. 

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?. Igot way more into hockey this year- I’ve traveled to  different cities to see games (Pittsburgh andNashville in 2017 and I’m going back to Pittsburgh in February with hopefullyvisits to Dallas, Washington or Vegas before the end of 2018). It gave me the chance to become friends with some great new people and have something to talk to my mom aboutand has been super fun so I hope I continue to get more into it in 2018

16. What song will always remind you of 2017? Praying by Kesha handsdown my favorite song of the year, I have listened to this entire album onrepeat pretty much since it came out.

I still haven’t gotten holiday cards and I feel like it’s much too late now for me to write nice ones and get them delivered in time, so instead I’ll be taking the rough amount I would have spent on them (and then some) and making a donation to the Sierra Club. It’s largely a cause dear to me, but if you’re moved to do so I encourage you to give any amount you’re comfortable with. I do apologize if you’re accustomed to receiving something from me at this time of year, but I have a stationery addiction and don’t need a reason to snail mail things~ (so if we’re chummy enough mutuals and you want to run your address by me—even if I’ve asked for it in the past—to make sure that what I have is up-to-date, please do that and who knows what might happen!)

Back to Japan–I don’t have a preference where, but again again always again! It’s a confounding and exquisite place that I’ll never be able to puzzle out, but being there is enough. 

Can I count all of the national parks in the U.S. as a single unit? I’ve been to my fair share, but there are so many beautiful ones out there.

New Zealand has been on my mind ever since I needed to live out that Tolkien fantasy. And Fiordland National Park.

Strawberry // A language you wish you could speak

There are many new languages I could list here, but at this point I wish I were perfectly fluent in the languages I already know to varying degrees? I’m bilingual in English and Cantonese, but while you could drop me in Hong Kong and I could get around fine, I wish I had the fluency of a native speaker, ya know? I can’t exactly get into academia, politics, literature, etc. at this point. Not to mention how much incredible slang and idioms there are that I still don’t know!

I can understand a good deal of Mandarin, but my speaking it is a bit Not Great; the same goes for Spanish. 

Mocha // Ideal weather conditions

New England Autumn. Towards the tail end of it when there’s just a hint of winter sneaking into the air: 30-odd degrees with that bright sunshine and a crisp breeze. All of those root vegetables and hot apple cider, being able to cocoon myself in scarves for the next several months. It’s my favourite feeling. 

Green tea // Favourite flavors of ice cream

Nothing can beat a high quality matcha. Absolutely nothing. And that’s followed by black sesame, chocolate raspberry, and a good ol’ vanilla.
