World Book Day - Where The Wild Things Are
I am a bit of a loser as I LOVE World Book Day. And that’s only because I get to make! Hooray!
Whilst reading Judy & Ada their bedtime story I asked Judy what she thought she might like to go as. Suggestions included Pippi Longstockings, which she dressed up as last year & Mildred Hubble as we are reading those books. I suggested Little My from the Moomins & we went through some of our book collection to see.
As we pulled out Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak, I instantly wanted to make something from this - I just needed to coerce Judy!
It didn’t take much to get Judy excited by the idea so coerce feels like too strong a word. She had initially wanted to be the girl character, but then we thought that Douglas the Bird would be a bit more creative to work with.. and her christmas sequinned skirt did kind of look like feathers...
It’s amazing what you can achieve with an old bed sheet & some felt tip pens! I used transfer paper to print on the characters head... but my ink cartridge was running very low... see those awful horizontal lines? I didnt have enough paper to reprint it so decided to just saturate the colours with felt tip pens... One thing I should have done though was use iron on stiffner with the crown... ah hind sight!
Judy was exceptionally excited by the outfit & loved the progress... She even helped me sew the tail onto a belt! hooray!
Of course, Ada was witnessing our little adventure & declared that she wanted to be the girl one... we couldn’t leave her out now could we? I had to do the crown smaller so I could fit the prints onto one single sheet of A4, but she only has a diddy head anyway.
Let the wild rumpus start!
