Juju Zombie on the L-Train
Although Dan lives in Portland now, he called into the talk show ‘Darkness Radio’ on March 21st of 2016 to talk about the bizarre and harrowing experience he had while living in Chicago. He said that he was riding the L-Train on the way to a rock-and-roll concert, and was sitting ‘two or three seats off from the door’. This position allowed him to see a large African American man enter the train, but there was something very disturbing about this man. Dan had apparently worked in healthcare for 22 years, and knew the man who had walked into the carriage - but he said that he knew that the man had been dead ‘as long as I’ve been alive’.
Dan says that he looked up at the ostensibly undead man, and saw that ‘his ears were sewn shut. His eyelids were sewn shut. His nose. His mouth... Everything was sewn shut’. His hair was also described as being matted. Dan was sitting there, and his blood was running cold. He was thinking ‘God please, let him not be for me’. The zombie rode the L-Train for two or three stops before disembarking - leaving Dan ‘just terrified out of my mind’.
When he got to the concert and saw some of his friends, he talked about his experience with them, and he said that he understands ghosts to some degree, but thinks that the undead are just ‘not right’. It becomes clear that he was deeply horrified by his experience as he goes on to say ‘Oh my God! There was no way you could not see it. I'm sitting there and I'm looking at it’. He is clearly a spiritual man, saying that he was a punker (punk rocker, I think - there are several definitions but this one makes the most sense) at the time and that he had protection painted onto his jacket. He was thinking ‘Glove to Glove, God, Gabriel, all the angels, please watch over me right now’ just before the zombie left the train. Lastly, he also speculated that the creature was a zombie sent by a practitioner of Juju magic - which is roughly analogous to black magic in certain Creole and African practices.
