do u know what happened to jujubiest?
I have no idea, sorry!
So I'm on your mailing list and I wanted to let you know I tried drafting something the way you described your process in a recent email (the 3 outlines before the first draft), and I am never going back. It works SO much better for me than anything else I've tried. Thank you for sharing it!
^^ No problem, I’m glad it was helpful!
Yeah, with my ADHD, it really helps me to keep track of plots (and to not lose sight of character arcs) if I start broad and then drill down.
Also, for the light outline, I would 100% recommend checking out Take Off Your Pants by Libbie Hawker. I recently reread it when I started writing Ember Academy, and it’s really useful for outlining.
For people who don’t know what we’re talking about, I was going to link to the newsletter in question, but then I remembered that it had a link to newsletter exclusives in it, so I’ll just copy/paste the main text here (and you can join the newsletter here if you want):
Hi!
So, writing is weird. Everyone has a different process.
Writing in public (or at least chapter-by-chapter) again has shown me just how much my process has changed since I used to do the same, way back in the fanfiction.net days.
Mostly, it’s become more iterative.
I will typically run through the entire book dozens of times, each time fleshing things out a bit more.
Step One is the basics. Just a very vague overview of the plot, usually in the context of the series as a whole.
We’re talking just a few lines.
Step Two is fleshing this out a bit more. Putting it into its own Outline file and figuring out the order of events and some of the middle bits. I call this the Light Outline.
Step Three is a the Heavy Outline. So, detailing everything that happens, beat by beat:
- Character A says something- Character B isn’t happy but doesn’t have a better idea- Character C assures them that it’ll all work out
You know, stuff like that.
And then Step Four is the First Draft.
The later books get in a series, the cleaner the First Draft is..
But for the first book in a series? Well, I’m still working out the character voice, and if it’s a new genre (even just an new sub-genre), I need to see the words written down before I can decide whether or not they’re working.
Which can lead to several drafts before I get to editing, which is its own iterative process.
And I have a nasty habit of scrapping something completely or rewriting the majority of it, rather than just tweaking.
Which is why the Ember Academy draft up on Patreon has doubled in size this week.
I decided to completely rewrite the beginning.
By which I mean, I added three new chapters to the beginning.
I felt that something was wrong with the pacing since the beginning - there simply weren’t enough stakes - so the rewrite didn’t come out of nowhere, making me a little confident that there shouldn’t be another this large.
But again, it’s an iterative process, so who knows?
@jujubiest MUAHAHAHA I BEAT YOU TO THE PUNCH
jujubiest replied to your post “That concludes the grimm posts for now but I’ll probably live blog it...”
The livestream I was watching literally died during the Nadalind scene in last night's episode and I was like "me too, livestream. Me too."
Livestream doing the lord’s work and killing the Nadalind scenes
The Pretender (1996 - 2000) Season 3, Episode 9: Murder 101 Michael T. Weiss as Jarod and Tamara Braun as Claire Dunning
