If you’ve never lived in Florida, I don’t know if I can fully explain just how much of a stranglehold the Disney company has on life here. Every single political chess move that Disney makes has ripples that affect Florida’s average citizen.
The current shitshow tying together Disney, Don’t Say Gay, trans kids getting fucked over, and the financial shitshow between DeSantis and Disney World…is making me so goddamn tired. The housing crisis in Florida is horrific, and Disney has a direct hand in it. They have for years and years and years. Disney’s land development scams started the second Walt started buying up land around Kissimmee and they never stopped.
I keep seeing posts saying shit like “omg don’t personify Disney as the Mouse, say the names of the CEOs,” and as someone who was born & raised in Florida, I need y'all to understand that it’s not just a single dude, or even a handful of dudes. The entire fucking company permeates daily life in Florida and seeing that rat’s fucking face everywhere makes me want to burn Mickey in effigy.
The Mouse represents everything about Disney that makes living in Florida increasingly inaccessible to the poor. They could replace the entire Disney board of directors tomorrow and the Mouse would still be a symbol of everything Floridians are suffering under.
Also, personally, associating Mickey Mouse–an international symbol of Disney’s saccharine image–with the violence and brutality of Disney’s corporate greed? I think it’s a great idea. Let’s make it so that nobody can look at Disney’s literal logo without thinking “holy shit, violent crimes committed in the name of capitalism.”
This is particularly relevant as Disney has just lost it’s special self-governing status in Florida (sort of; the privileges are set to expire in 2023, meaning there is plenty of time for a reversal)
This loss of status is in response to Disney pausing (not ending; pausing) donations to politicians who supported Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill; Gov. DeSantis has been upfront that this is retaliation. There are a lot of takeaways from this: most notable to me, this decision is confirmation that Republicans love social control more than “free market” capitalism, and indicative of the right-wing’s slide towards fascism. But there is going to be a tendency to simplify this into DeSantis = homophobia = bad VS Disney = LGBTQ+ rights = good. Disney is not good. Disney is not on the side of the LGBTQ+ community.
I mentioned that choosing social control over “free market” capitalism is a tip towards fascism, but “free market” capitalism over human rights to food, shelter, and all other necessities is a MUCH MORE PERVASIVE fascist threat. Disney is responsible for enormous economic and environmental inequities; not just in Florida, but in every place they maintain resorts or other entertainment sites. They are a “too big to fail” mega-corporation that is not only devouring the creative industry, but also a vanguard of neocolonial culture-as-aesthetic and culture-as-consumerism mindsets. They will bleed you dry, then make an Oscar-nominated musical out of it.
It will be interesting to see how Disney responds to the loss of their self-governing status; my guess is that make good with DeSantis by quietly resuming donations, and this all goes away for them. However, even if they do proclaim to take a “principled” stand and refuse on the grounds that they “stand with the LGBTQ+ community,” do not mistake Disney’s actions for anything less than a marketing ploy. Democrats have indicated a willingness to restore Disney’s self-governance, and therefore Disney may be comfortable taking a calculated risk of snubbing DeSantis in favor of liberal goodwill: they are banking on you having a short memory. If they cared about the LGBTQ+ community, a community that often struggles with low-income/unemployment status, increased health/medical care risks, and increased homelessness/displacement, they would be doing more than offering us blink-and-you’ll miss it “representation” in the background of their multi-billion dollar franchises. They would embrace their loss of self-governance status and invest their revenue directly into the communities they reside in. They would never have supported DeSantis & co. in the first place.
Hung out with a dude once who when he learned I can identify all the zodiac symbols on sight informed me he normally considered that a red flag, and there was no normal way to be like. Well first of all, you should respect astrology bitches more. But second of all it is a red flag because it indicates I've read Homestuck.
A flag even redder in ways he couldn’t even conceive.
this whole situation is very funny
credit to @cryptvokeeper for the idea!
Hey yall, I wanted to make a PSA about this because it'll be useful to many of you in the United States. You might qualify for public assistance now, specifically because of rising food prices.
The federal poverty line, the biggest determining factor for public assistance, has been kept artificially low for decades because it was based on the outdated assumption that food was the primary expense for most American households. For decades now, shelter has been the larger expense, but the federal poverty limit has still been determined based on the prices of food commodities.
Because food prices have recently gone up, the federal poverty line has gone up significantly as well. This means if you were previously slightly over the income limit to qualify for public assistance such as food stamps or medicaid, you likely qualify now. I'd like to encourage everyone who thinks they might qualify to apply for these programs. The qualification cutoffs are still absurdly low, so please be assured that if you qualify for assistance, you're not taking something you don't need or deserve.
Please reblog this if you think your followers will find it useful. I haven't seen anyone talking about this, it's just something I noticed recently, so I want the info to become more public to help people who might be struggling.
oh wow I could hurt myself so badly on this
Not many people are making this connection in the notes so I thought I’d add it here!
I think this is one of those “roly-poly” dancers that went viral from China a while back, who would use a similar mechanism to sway back and forth, with similar hand gestures (calling back to traditional Chinese dance) while wearing hanfu.
You can see a dancer in action in this video!: https://youtu.be/GRcERvuJpR8
And here’s how she looks completely; as you can see, the round thing she’s riding is basically hidden by the skirt of her hanfu:
IIRC, this performance was to promote tourism for the city of Xi’an (modern day Chang’an), hence why the performers are dressed in Tang dynasty-style hanfu.
I turned on closed captions for the Swedish Chef and I just started weeping with laughter.
You actually do need noble lineage to rightfully rule, but since lineage doesn’t dilute, and given the historic sexual tendencies of people in power wrt their servants, eventually noble lineage spread wide enough that everyone had it and that’s why democracy happened.
nice *adds to list of theories that irritate everybody*
my favourite adhd / general executive dysfunction feeling is when you become very consciously aware that you are bored and there is nothing interesting left on the 5 social media apps you’ve been cycling around for the past hour and finally a small logical part of your brain goes “hey! perhaps at this point it might actually be more fun to do one of the productive things you’ve been putting off!” and you’re this close to going oh huh yeah maybe that's true! and getting up to do some housework or read a book or something when a far louder part of your brain goes “NO WAIT!!!! maybe THIS time when we refresh tumblr.... it will be interesting again” and you’re like "ohhhh right sorry for doubting you boss" & promptly get right back to doing fuck all
concept: a death god that is actually surprisingly supportive and on the side of the good guys, supporting actions and promoting policies that will lead to the kingdom growing and thriving instead of being destroyed, because the more the kingdom grows, the more people there are, and the more people there are the more people will eventually die, and when you’re an immortal god of death, you know there’s no need to rush. you’ll get them all in the end
i like how the responses on this post are cleanly split between “hey this is a great story idea i love it” and “this is absolutely terrifying”
Yes. A Death that is kind, and patient, and inevitable.
A Death that need not fight against you, that will often fight for you, because why not? It will gather you home eventually. Why not enjoy you first?
A Death that treasures those who fight it most ardently. That loves healers and defenders and survivalists and necromancers and mad scientists and immortal gods. That lets them pour everything they are into fighting it, denying it, adoring every desperate scrap of strength and will and brilliance and raw determination poured out against it. That catches you when your strength is done and all your will and brilliance run out, that gathers you close beneath a warm, dark cloak, and whispers well done, oh child, you were magnificent, well done.
A Death who will not seek to hasten an inevitable end, who will chastise those who seek to hasten it for others in Death’s stead, who will slowly and patiently plot and sow and siphon away from the great monsters of the world. Because who are they to hasten Death’s domain, who are they to deny Death its time and its place, who are they to cut short these vital glories that illuminate it so? Who are they to presume upon its will, that is so much larger and so much longer than theirs?
Who are they to call, and presume that Death, of all beings, should obey?
A Death that is not a hunter but a gatherer, who is always and eternal, who loves you, and can afford to wait. A Death who will fight for you and defend you, who will place its hand upon those who would speed you to its embrace, who has no need to rush you, only to greet you when you call.
A Death who is kind.
And patient.
And, before all and above all,
inevitable.
Who are they to call,
and presume that Death, of all
beings, should obey?
Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.
The main thing I get from Dylan Hollis cooking old recipes is this:
Recipes from the 1910s and the Great Depression are great, and I suspect it’s because they were made by someone with limited resources. But they found a way to make something good, maybe even something fantastic with those limited resources, and they wanted to write it down and share with their friends so that they could also make something out of saltines and potatoes. Recipes from the 1910s and the Great Depression are written down and shared in love.
The recipes you should fear come from the 1950s and 1960s, which I’m pretty sure are written down and shared as a form of McCarthyism.
I strongly suspect that the rise in horrifying recipes in the 50s, 60s and 70s is that this is when recipes were being used as advertising. Whether or not the recipe was tasty or even palatable at all was a secondary concern at best to if it could convince a housewife to buy more Chlorox Brand Lard™️ to try it out.
Interestingly, there has been a resurgence of that exact phenomenon, which perhaps you’ve seen: viral cooking media Meme recipes of unfamiliar origin? Videos of impossible recipes or trick editing? “Life Hacks”? I bet these will be the Horrifying Sixties Recipes of tomorrow, because they are also made to sell attention rather than to inform.
At this point, I would like to remind you all of Ann Reardon, and her youtube channel “How to Cook That” where she not only debunks and explains the trickery behind all those “viral baking hacks” but also provides ways to ACTUALLY make those things where possible, as well as a numberbof other delightful recipes, and often has her willing husband taste test the internet’s culinary monstrosities. She’s the hero we need so 50 years from now another Dylan Hollis won’t destroy his microwave or his face trying to make “ ‘this easy 2 ingredient microwave caramel!!!’ that comes to us from 2021 from the channel ‘5 Minute Crafts’.”
Reardon is also a vocal advocate against Youtube, Tiktok, and Facebook allowing (and borderline encouraging) dangerous videos to become so viral on their platforms. She frequently cites incidents where people were hospitalized, marred for life, killed, poisoned, or accidentally burnt down their homes attempting to recreate tacky clickbait recipes and crafts.
And, like Dylan Hollis, she too recreates incredibly old recipes (usually 100yrs or more) while adding educational background to the reasons a recipe calls for this or that weird ingredient/technique. She also makes clickbait-like videos herself like "Giant Snickers Bar!" or "Holographic Chocolate!" only when you click you get EXACTLY what was advertised. She WILL show you how to make a Minecraft cake or a giant Kit-Kat or a sweet gift from an old snack package. Because Ann Reardon is a professional, wonderful person who believes the world should be better.
…………….y’all ready for Pesach?
Because this person certainly is!
My goyische fiance: “Is this a prank?”
after being informed it is not:
“At that point you should just go outside and build a kosher hut”

I’m sobbing this is a perfect addition
We knew this couple from our schul back in the day who had an issue with birds continually flying into their french window, so upon advice from an animal control expert they lined the outside of the window with foil as a measure to ward off the birds.
They happened to do this right before Pesach and their neighbours asked them if this was some kind of Passover tradition. At the time they were like “Huh? OMG goyim have such weird ideas about Jews!” but after seeing this, I’m now in the opinion that the neighbours were right.
I am not jewish so my presence is not relevant. However i am high. And i genuinely cant tell if this makes ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE WHATEVER because i am high or because im not jewish. Or are jewish holidays just…. Like that.
Jewish people: this post
Me, a simple non jew who happens to be high as balls, sobbing: what the fuck does this mean
Yo @transenbyhollis that is an extremely fair question, high or not.
For you and the rest of the peanut gallery, the joke here is honestly…. just kind of something you had to have lived through to really get?
So you may be aware that many Jews (in particular, religious Jews, but some secular Jews also) keep the dietary laws known as kashrut. The really, really basic meaning of this is that we only eat meat from certain animals that has been slaughtered in a certain way, and we separate meat and dairy. How people observe this in practice varies a lot. If you follow the strict traditional rules, you have separate dishes, cookware, and ideally appliances for meat and dairy. However, there is a whole continuum of practices that are more lenient.
In any event, for eight days a year, during the holiday of Pesach (Passover), those who keep kosher year-round (and even some who don’t) observe unique kashrut rules that involve removing all of the chametz (leavened grain products) from the household and one’s diet. If one holds by traditional observance, ridding one’s life of chametz in preparation for Pesach is a BIG deal, and includes a truly insane amount of cleaning and then the covering of surfaces that cannot be kashered.
People literally clean for a month to be fully prepared. In fact, you know what? I’m just gonna drop this here: https://www.chabad.org/holidays/passover/pesach_cdo/aid/664473/jewish/Printable-Passover-Guide-2019.htm.
It’s such an intensive process that once you’ve lived through it, it only makes sense to make jokes about it. Covering items that do not have and couldn’t even have food on them (see: the toilet paper) is hilariously over the top, but a good tension relief when you’re on your tenth hour of scrubbing your entire kitchen with a toothbrush to ensure that literally no cookie crumb has escaped.
GUESS WHAT TIME IT IS AGAIN
Sudden mental image of a dude just taking a power washer to his kitchen
when i was a small child i (christian-raised) understood: Passover and Easter are two holidays that are around the same time of year but different; Easter is the Christian holiday celebrating Jesus’s return from the dead; Passover involves a ban on chametz and can involve observers throwing a lot of chamitz away. Young me came to the knowledgable conclusion that Jesus = chametz
