TIME FOR MY YEAR IN REVIEW:
JANUARY:
We survived the third impact.
There was this one day in when I spent 10 hours at a café talking and drawing with a friend.
I was rly thin.
FEBRUARY:
I had this very long conversation with a good friend of mine. We discussed about what I should do with my career. I can't believe this conversation would carry on to define the rest of 2016.
I went to this trivia night thing, and our team won!
MARCH:
I saw Zootopia. This is important.
I finished "Jack and the Magic Beans," a short film I had been working on for a REALLY LONG TIME. My ex-bosses showcased that at their booth at SXSW.
I started developing "Nicki and Hawn," my Pixelatl project of the year.
I crashed my car.
APRIL:
I competed in a swim meet for the first time in something like 6+ years, and I actually placed in the podium!
I had the brilliant idea to produce a huge short with the kids at one of the schools where I teach. Worked on lots of pre, and production stuff during this month.
Invader Zim began being printed in Mexico, and my cover reached mainstream retailers. I'd never seen anything I’d worked on being sold at a major store. I almost cried.
MAY:
Finished that other short. It's not very good, so it's nowhere to be seen online.
I was a guest at a local Comic Book Store for Free Comic Book Day. I felt important. I got an undercut afterwards.
My cousin got married in Playa del Carmen. It was a lovely trip, although I did bring some Nicki and Hawn work with me.
JUNE:
The Agency where I used to work joined a Dodgeball League. It was fun.
One of my best friends got married out of town. Another nice trip.
I started watching Osomatsusan.
JULY:
I took a modelling class in Maya. Gave me the necessary tools to tell my students they NEED to be able to draw, even if they think they “just” wanna do Maya modelling.
I drew A LOT of Osomatsusan fanart.
Some art of mine got turned into pins, as official Rick and Morty merch.
I quit my agency job.
I started watching Mob Psycho 100.
AUGUST:
I went to LA for the Gravity Falls Gallery Nucleus Art Show. I still can’t believe I got in, and I am terribly indebted to Alex Hirsch and the Gallery Nucleus people for creating the conditions that helped me not go into another depressive episode after quitting my agency job.
SEPTEMBER:
Marked my 1-year anniversary of being antidepressants-free.
So many cons, and festival stuff. I tabled at a local YAOI con with my friend Lisa, went to Pixelatl (and had my self-esteem and confidence destroyed again, but it only took me about a week to recover), and was a signing guest at a major con in Mexico City. WHUT WHUT!?
I also started writing regularly for a blog.
OCTOBER:
Yuri on Ice premiered. I never knew I would love it so much, especially considering the stylistic whiplash I got coming out of Osomatsusan and Mob Psycho 100.
I also worked on a thing that should be released in January, I hope.
I did my last swim meet of the year, and did terribly.
NOVEMBER:
I was in another Gallery Nucleus art show. Only one of my pieces sold, but the staff raised the prices by 300%. I never thought my stuff could sell for that much.
I worked on another thing that should be released in January...
I did a 5K and had katsudon afterwards. It was fun.
I also guest-signed at a local con.
DECEMBER:
I worked on another thing that should be released who-knows-when, and was a guest at a convention in Guadalajara (I met some rly nice cosplayers there, and we all went for Korean afterwards. It was a rly nice trip).
Oh, yeah, my computer is dying.
I also did a bunch of covers for Rick and Morty, but none have been announced, LOL. Oh! And at some point I got a credit card. YAY ME!
This year was... really weird. Like you can split it in three periods: One in which I had no idea what I was doing or where my career was going, a period of mild satisfaction, and a complete break from the norm, and actual evolution and moving forward in my career. I don't know. This year feels like I went through three very different arcs. I feel like I’ve grown a lot, to the point where my psychiatrist even congratulated me once. Here’s to 2017!
