#Jukeboxy ’s first band of the week is Brooklyn’s own Porches..
Throughout the Indie scene, countless bands have consisted of a synthesizer, female harmonies, and lead singer with an obscure range. But Porches. takes all of these over-used idiosyncrasies and morphs them into their own authentic, uncategorized sound.
The simplistic yet powerful style of front-man Aaron Maine’s songwriting swallows the band’s audience almost quickly as his raspy baritone voice. And his brutally-honest, autobiographical lyrics are accompanied by the bassist’s, Greta Kline (Frankie Cosmos), beautiful harmonies. They also may have the best opening lyrics to any album ever, on their track Headsgiving off “Slow Dancing in The Cosmos”. “I’ll give you head before you head to therapy.”
Overall, the intricate combination of all musical forces is what makes them, as a whole, receive enormous admiration from the current New York music scene. Each grain of salt in the band that is Porches. plays a meticulously crucial role in their celestial sound.
We saw Porches. play at The Space in Hamden, Connecticut along with Frankie Cosmos (the alter ego for their bassist, Greta Kline), and Hospitality (now on tour with Jeff Tweedy and his son Spencer). At the show they played a few unreleased songs that still encompassed their fresh, unique style.
We here at #Jukeboxy hope to see these songs, and some more new art released sometime in the near future!
Their next show is at the Bowery Ballroom opening for New York-based indie rock quartet Hooray For Earth. Tickets are available at Boweryballroom.com, or at the door!
