We here at JukeBoxy have picked Lititz, Pennsylvania band, The Districts, as our Band of The Week.
The Districts have an indie rock-blues-rough folk vibe that can’t be matched by anyone else in any respective music scene. That’s why the Lancaster County band who started out playing shows around their hometown, in friend’s warehouse’s and home’s (see link to Out Of Town Films), got the attention of Mississippi label Fat Possum Records. Possum has signed an excessive amount of renown artists, such as, The Black Keys, Band of Horses, Andrew Bird, Caveman, Christopher Owens (Girls), and Iggy and The Stooges. This label obviously has a musical pallet that has wined and dined with some of the new decade’s most influential and powerful acts. The Districts are no exception.
Earlier in 2013 The Districts only had their self-recorded album Telephone up on Bandcamp and Soundcloud. It is nothing short of an outstanding album, to say the least. It begins with a “good morning” to a girl named “Lyla”, and is orchestrated with the beautiful crooning of lead singer, Rob Grote’s raspy, emotional voice, and the loud plucks, strums, and drums of a band that is flawlessly in sync. The meticulously planned combinations of minor to major changes and chorus to bridge fluctuations, really make you feel like each person in the band poured their pain and sweat into each song.
In November of 2013, The Districts announced their signing with Fat Possum, releasing their single “Vermont” , and a self-entitled EP containing three songs from their previous album, Telephone, and two new songs, “Rocking Chair”, and “Stay Open”. The album attracted much success, gaining them a national tour with White Denim, another band signed to Fat Possum.
The success of these albums, along with the band’s unmatched live performances, cultivated a near cult following. We call it a “cult” following not because of the amount of fans, but because of their loyalty.
While parked outside The City Museum in St. Louis, the band had their van stolen. In the van was all the bands equipment, and some cash from previous gigs. Following suit with their americana vibe, the Districts made due with what they had, and finished the tour by taking Greyhound busses to different cities, and loaning equipment from other bands.
The Districts began a fundraiser on indiegogo.com in order to try and gain funds to buy new gear. In just a matter of months, the band exceeded their goal by 1700 dollars. It’s a beautiful thing that a young band like this can already establish such support and admiration.
And we are not surprised, because If there is one thing you take away from listening to The Districts, it’s that they are a young band with enormous talent, and limitless potential.
