Ellie and Abbie (& Ellie’s Dead Aunt) [2020] has a ridiculous premise, but is a genuinely good movie.
With a uniquely Aussie sense of humor, this romantic comedy examines the queer generational gap: the history of the struggle, how different the experience of coming out is now and yet how many things remain the same. The story is by turns hilarious and painful, awkward and sweet.
“Fairy” godmothers, Promposals, not so secret smoking and twists and turns that you won’t see coming, this movie is definitely worth watching. (Currently streaming on Showtime)

I don’t know if anyone else has seen this movie, but it gives me such catradora vibes

The Vito Russo Test (3/3):
At least one queer character… ✔️ Three! At least.
Who is not predominantly defined by their sexual orientation/gender… ✔️ The movie has almost nothing to do with it. There might be one scene where it’s the topic?
And is tied into the plot in such a way that their removal would have a significant effect. ✔️ Protagonist, sidekick, mentor/love interest.
My Two Cents (3/3):
What made me cringe:
Gay best friend trope I suppose...
What made me happy:
Road trip movies!
The women have multifaceted talents/drives.
The sheer concept of the thing... Running away with a bunch of stolen money through the Australian outback...
Happy ending!
The idea that queer people don’t live solitary lives surrounded entirely by straights, as they are the token item.
Lumberjack lesbian. Sorry, but I love it.
