Julia Webb - Two Poems
Bunting
The birds are strung on the wire by their beaks, some wings fall open like broken books, some stay firmly folded closed, and here HE comes with another bird, the sky falling away from it, its eye-bead clouding over. He smacks the bird down on the table, drill, is all he says.

These days I write my own radio show and play it in my head. My nights are filled with imaginary whale song, those whales silvery and spectacular, swimming against the tide of my blood.

Weir
Bikes piled on yellow grass, and a slither of steps hacked from the river bank - with their neon coating of weed, the creak and groan of the swings, and the glory of boys in baggy y-fronts, balancing on the metal bar of the weir, the whiteness of their thin bodies dazzling, how arcs of water flew from them as they abandoned themselves to the jump.

My Sister’s Feet
They’ve always been a 6 she says cramming them into lipstick-red stilettos. They remind me of Sandy and Ginger our childhood guinea pigs: the way when startled they would wedge themselves inside their tiny wooden house, fur bulging from every window; how sometimes we thought we would never get them out.
